[HowTo] QNAP feat. Nas4Free @ TS-459

Hi folks!
Unfortunately it is not possible to install the FreeNAS Image into a 512k DOM module. But here I would like to present the NAS4Free Image which will work on the TS-459 Pro+.
And there is not a big different between the NAS4Free or FreeNAS Image. I don't want to say it's the same but they have the same father

Background:

I was looking for ...

Clear Data before Sale

I replaced my 419 PII with a 469-L in December and just migrated the drives over, now I want to sell the 419 w/o drives but want to clear any information or factory reset the unit. Do I need to install a drive to do a factory reset? And how do I do a factory reset or clear any data in the ram?

Thanks
Alan

Customize Admin Front-End (Stylesheet) - How?

Hi everybody,

I would like to modify/change/customize the web front-end of my QNAP. Is there a simply way (e.g. CSS styling) to do that?

For me the font-size in the administration page is to small. An other part is to change the background-color from white to a light grey.

Furthermore I often use my iPhone to maintain the QNAP. In some cases I would prefer the web front-end instead of the iPhone App. Unfortunately the ...

Finding libXi.so.6 et al

Hi,

I'm trying to install jEdit (http://www.jedit.org) on my TS-469L (running 3.8.1 Build 20121205), so I can map its window back to my Windows machine running Xming. I've installed all the X Window related IPKGs I can see on my 469L and set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point at /opt/lib. However I can't find an IPKG which contains libXi.so.6. Does anyone know where I can get it from?

[HOWTO] Truecrypt 7.1a

Description

This HOWTO describes how to compile and install Truecrypt on your QNAP NAS. Truecrypt is an open-source cryptography tool that encyphers whole disk partitions or data within container files. It is capable of AES, Twofish, Serpent and combinations of these cyphers. If your installation succeeds, you can, for example, mount a container as a network share. All files that are put into this share are automatically encrypted by the NAS. You have to remount ...

installing unison on 419p/arm

this process should work on any arm model, and will probably work fine on intel as well. I will be making improvements to this post a little at a time as my time is limited.

step one, you need a qnap device.

step two, go to your qnap admin interface, usually located on port 8080, go to qpkg manager and install optware/ipkg, make sure it enables.

step three, download a copy of unison source code ...

Per-User Crontabs

So I've set up passwordless SSH connections for several users on my NAS to other servers, so I can pull the backups from there.
My problem now is that I intended to use per-user cronjobs, so that the server's backup user executes the backup script. The QNAP doesn't allow this, only the admin user has a crontab. Is there any way to change that?

How to add spinup/spindown to event.log? How to add spinup/spindown to event.log?

I think this info would be very useful to monitor NAS activity (and possible issues), but could not find it anywhere in admin gui. Is it stored somewhere, if not, how can it be added to logs?
