Your forum profile does list a TS-859U-RP+ - do you experience this issue with your NAS, or are you here just to create noise?

Excellent idea in case you tend forget the admin password every now and then, and can generate a root password valid for all these NAS "products" in the field.

I'm also having issues trying to upgrade my ts-412 to the latest firmware revision 4.0.7 20140412. The system reports "update failure: file format error" and "System update failed. No enough space on RAM/ disk available for firmware update.". What's the easiest/fastest way to work around that issue without losing any data or settings?

What I've explained just a few posts before. It's the official workaround by the way.

Hereby it's essential not to copy (cp) or move (mv) the firmware image to /mnt/HDA_ROOT/update/ and use an alternate storage location.

If you can't deal with it, don't hesitate to contact QNAP Customer Service for assistance.

I just wanted to say thanks.
I also had the 'No enough space on Ram/Disk" error trying to update via the web login.
When trying to do it manually using the web login I got an Invalid firmware error using the Global download.
I then tried doing it via SSH method shown here, and had similar Invalid firmware errors, so re-downloaded the firmware, this time from the Europe link (I'm in Australia fwiw) and tried again, and finally got it to work after following the below cleanup procedure then starting again as listed in previous posts.

[~] # rm -rf /mnt/HDA_ROOT/update/
[~] # rm -rf /mnt/update

Not sure if there is a bad copy of the firmware on QNAP or a bad download, but that's how I finally got it.

What NAS model and firmware version are you talking of here? Hard to follow-up without these details...

The SS-839 (as per your profile) 4.0.7 firmware downloads are identical for me from us1, eu1, and download.

While the Europe and US hosts are unique, the global download is on Akamai's distributed network.

I run into this problem today, again, and the old trick, which is deleting the /mnt/update_pkg caused me lost all my existing packages along with my optware but still won't update. I'm more than desperate.

Look here - borrowed from the QTS 4.1.0 release notes:
[Qfix]
Subject:
-Solution for unsuccessful firmware update (QTS 4.1.0 Build 0504 and above)

Issue Description:
-Under certain circumstances, a Turbo NAS with a firmware version prior to QTS 4.1.0 Build 0504 may

experience an unsuccessful firmware update.

Solution:
-Applicable Turbo NAS firmware versions: 3.8.3 ~ 4.1.0 Build 0421
Please note: Please upgrade your Turbo NAS firmware first if it is older than Version 3.8.3, or contact

QNAP technical support for further assistance.

-If you have experienced a failed Turbo NAS firmware upgrade whilst updating to QTS 4.1.0 Build 0504 and

onward: first install the Qfix patch manually. After the Qfix installation, DO NOT restart the Turbo NAS,

and proceed to update the firmware directly either via online live update or manual update.

-Note: If you are still having issues with updating firmware, please contact QNAP Technical Support at

http://helpdesk.qnap.com/

Download:
-The Qfix patch can be downloaded from:
http://download.qnap.com/Storage/Qfix/Q ... .1_all.zip
On any case, post the transcript of the shell based update.sh run - as shown a few posts back, add df output before and after.

OK
(And I am breathing very slowly here...)
I have just carried out the manually updating firmware process on http://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Manually_Updating_Firmware

All seemed to go well until I rebooted and now it is asking me to run quick setup and initialize the NAS

It has changed the name of it and is threatening (:) ) to wipe the disks with all my data on them...

Help!!

TS-419Pii from 4.0.2. to 4.1.0

Like many others I failed to get the upgrade to 4.1 to work. No enough etc...

TODAY IT WORKED....

I had to reboot the NAS, the 10 second - don't lose my data - version. As it it restarted I decided to try to install the updated firmware I downloaded a month ago. I had no other applications running. No users set up. Logged in as admin. Chunter chanter chanter. It took 10 minutes in all and worked automatically.

OK - an engineer helped me today to (I think) rebuild the disks...

Image

7 hours later I am here:

Image

So the process has finished...
He said to reboot it then
I did via "reboot" command (I could manage that much...

Now it is asking me to initialize as no volumes exist
I assume it will proceed to wipe the disks now so I have popped them out...

Any advice?

On booting - I got this email

=======================
Server Name: NAS1
IP Address: 192.168.1.102
Date/Time: 2014/07/29 15:38:36
Level: Error
The system is unable to save your settings (file = [/var/qnapddns.conf], section = [Port Forward], field = [FTP/FTPS], value = [20,21]) due to insufficient ramdisk space. If restarting the server does not solve the problem please contact support for further assistance.
