Difference between TS-419P II and TS-419P+ for VMWare ESXi 5

Postby HellesAngel » Sat Jun 16, 2012 5:47 pm

First post to this board so hello everyone.

My question is relatively simple - what is the difference between the TS-419P II and the TS-419P+? In Europe the TS-419P+ is some 50 euro more expensive and as far as I can see is only different from the TS-419P II by a slightly slower CPU speed. As this doesn't make any sense I'm asking what I missed. The QNAP site doesn't make the comparison easy.

Given the choice which would work better attached to an ESXi 5 server? This is for a SOHO environment - I work as a freelance software developer - and the data on the NAS will be shared with mostly Linux and some Win7 machines and several Linux virtual machines in an ESXi 5 box.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The price difference does not make any sense indeed. Checking the prices from the same reseller or distibutor? One more feature: Additional USB 3.0 ports became available on the TS-x19P II modles - The TS-419P II with USB 3.0 ports to start shipping in May 2012 (from the factory). SmallNetBuilder has published serial numbers from where the two additional UB 3.0 are available -> http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas- ... nas-series

As of writing, only one QNAP model line is listed on the VPMware HCL for ESXi 5 - and with NFS support only. Validation for iSCSI and NFS for all models in in the pipeline.

Many thanks for your informative reply.

The site I'm using for the price comparison is http://geizhals.at/de/?in=&fs=TS-419P (sorry in German but you get the picture). In Germany, where I happen to be shopping, the TS-419P+ is 479 and the apparently better TS-419P II costs only 415. This could well be demand & competition forcing the price of the better TS-419P II down below the P+.

Currently I'm using a DNS323 as NAS and have the shares mounted as CIFS in all virtual machines. Although it works fine it's not fast and however I mount the TS-419P I'm fairly sure it will outperform the DNS323, which will be relegated to backup duty. If I manage to get the TS-419P properly integrated as an ESXi datastore then so much the better.

Thanks again.

It's the same in our market. When a new model is available and all the active resellers have shifted their focus to that new model there are always some hanging on to the older model, very often with a high price.

If there are any TS-419 P+ available, of course they should be less expensive especially now that the USB 3.0-equipped TS-X19PII-models comes to the market.
No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!
