Any plans for a new model / successor of the TS-251 ?

Post by superembolo »

Hi Guys,
i'm interested in one small NAS with good performance to store data at home, watch some video, run a virtual machine. No hurries, i just started some search.
1 Gb LAN should be enough, my router doesn't support link sticking or vlans.
I think the model 251c isn't the right choice for me because its ram isn't upgradable and doesn't support VMs.
Considering that the TS-251 was released more than 1 year ago, i'm wondeering if there will be a new version or a successor soon.
Thank You in advance.

these are the 2bay models currently available
https://www.qnap.com/i/en/product/contr ... %5B%5D=170

you have to use this and select from the feature list, virtualization, to filter which units can do that
https://www.qnap.com/i/en/product_x_selector/

Virtualization Platform
Use QNAP Virtualization Station to run multiple VMs on the Turbo NAS
251 and 253 pro is listed as able to do it.

Virtualization Storage
Ready for virtualization solutions including VMware, Citrix, Hyper-V
only 253 pro can do it.

Thanks Moogle Stiltzkin for your reply.
Anyway, as the subject suggests, i'd like to know if there's any plan for a new model / successor of the TS-251...

You have to ask QNAP what their plans are.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

if i were to speculate, maybe better cpu, more ram....

personally waiting for better filesystem btrfs (but this may take a while before it's mature enough for actual production on live system :( for raid 5/6 users anyway)

their newer 8bay model has thunderbolt, so maybe that will make its way down to 2bay ?

anyway seems better cpus tend to be in the bigger bay models usually. 4,5,6,8 :x

You can always get a 8bay TVS-871T with thunderbolt2 :} or wait till they make a cheaper fewer bay version with a similar spec.
https://www.qnap.com/solution/thunderbolt-nas/index.php

they do announcements from time to time on the main website, but sometimes even showroom events they will showcase products meant for future releases, usually will be mentioned on their facebook or twitter. so keeps your eyes on those :]

I'm absolutely sure there are plans for product development and there may even be something cooking in the Qnap hardware development lab, however this is the way it works here:
1. Qnap-employees (nobody outside Qnap would be able to reveal this kind of information) only very rarely respond in this forum at all.
2. Qnap-employees would only tell you about new hardware if it was just a week or so away from official release.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

TS-251+ Should be announced any day. Below is the product page for it. If the link doesn't work it's on the products page marked as new

https://www.qnap.com/i/useng/product/model.php?II=195

I heard they will start showing up this month. Newegg has them as out of stock as well as B&H

Thank you all for the replies.
This is exactly what I expected, I mean it's difficult to hear about something in development lab, but now I know that -supposedly- something should be cooking :)

i looked at the 251+

it has a quad core celeron cpu, and is sold in 2 ram configuration capacities, and both are upgradable up to 8gb.
System memory:
TS-251+-2G: 2GB DDR3L RAM (1 x 2GB)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

TS-251+-8G: 8GB DDR3L RAM (2 x 4GB)
Total memory slots: 2 SODIMM
Expandable up to: 8 GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

amazon says 251 (dual core) older model is $304 and the 253 pro (quad core) is $401;

on newegg the TS-251+-2G-US is $461.49
and QNAP TS-251+-8G-US is $573.96

but with these specs that was previously something you'd expect for a 253 pro SMB model, this new 251+ is listed under homo/soho. Makes me wonder then whats going to replace 2bay in smb segment. but it's going to be a higher price than the 251+8gb model, so maybe i5 or i7 cpu perhaps ? (maybe even thunderbolt 2 perhaps tee hee) But if your going into that realm you would think you get a 4 bay model at least kek.

*update

notice 251+ got added to the nas selector, from looks of it, it also got a software feature update as well (snapshots functionality)

I'm trying to pick between the TS-253 Pro vs. a short wait for the TS-251+ ("Nov to Dec time frame" is what marketing told me.) It looks like the 253 Pro has key locks and some virtualization features (Hyper-V, VMWare, etc), and the 251+ has an included remote. Otherwise, the hardware specs look nigh identical.

Does anyone have any information about whether the software support & licenses differ between the models?
