The TVS-671 is not that old and there is no successor, yet. So no! I don't think it has been discontinued. It is a great NAS, especially if you upgrade the memory and CPU.

The i7-4790S will work, but maybe the 4790T or 4785T are a better choice. Wisely consider TDP vs performance.

After all, it is still a NAS and not a PC ;)

Thanks a lot for the answer. I am looking of lot of 4k transcoding for my videos so I was looking for more power. But you are right, I need to consider the TDP as well. So I was looking for 490S -

I am getting the i3 TVS-871. What would be the Best RAM module I can use for the upgrade? I think since it is TVS-871 I can get the intel Core i7-4790S.

Amazon - Crucial CT2KIT102464BF160B 16GB Kit DDR3-1600 MT/s 204-Pin SODIMM Notebook Memory has this as recommendation, does this work ? QNAP memory is 10 times expensive than this!

I assume you are talking about 4K HEVC file transcoding. Please let me know if the i7 can handle it. As far as I know QNAP has no plans to support HEVC (H265) transcoding with hardware acceleration. Even these new ones that aren't out yet say (H264) transcoding. King of pointless if you ask me because who want to keep enormous 4K h264 files on their harddrive. Also some TVs such as vizio only support h265 4K content.

Source, references, ... ?

To stream this kind of content, you need no transcoding on the storage, what relevance has this?

My source was a Qnap engineer supporting me on an open case.

If the 4K source file is not h265 the tv will will not play it or transcode to 1080p.

...so there is no need to transcode on the NAS

If they say so, why wouldn't it be true?

In my market only one reseller still market it. Also in my market, the TVS-671-i3-4G is still offered from many resellers at only 3 % more...
The TVS-671-PT-4G is currently available at B&H:

I have the TVS-871 i3 now. Waiting on my Core i7 4790S. Its running well and temperature is 36C/96F degrees now idle. I have added 16 gig (8x2) Crucial and works well. It got detected fine and so far so good.

Running with 6* 4 TB WD Red Pro 7200 rpm 128 Mb cache network disks. and 2 SSD 256 Gig Samsung 850 Pro.

I ordered a TVS-471 along with the i7-4790T and 2x8 GB of RAM (ADATA 16GB (1600MHz, CL11).
I hope I'll get it working together...

I've installed all (i7 4790s, 2x8gb CMSX16GX3M2B1600C9, 2xNoctua NF-A9) but it wouldn't boot (status light is constant red with System booting >> message forever), removed accessible 8Gb RAM module and it booted OK, installed stock 2Gb instead and it booted too showing 10gb ram.. I'm afraid the 8gb module is broken or QNAP somehow doesnt' want 16gb RAM.. :' in 4.2.0.., any idea?

will leave 10GB ram for now, and will check the "broken" module elsewhere.. took some pictures, will post soon.

Qnap does allow 16gb ram, I've 2x8gb installed on my 471-i3.

What about the CPU upgrade process? How much time it takes?
