no login needed to access shared network drives - possible?

Postby pcsx » Tue Jun 16, 2009 9:04 pm

I am looking for a NAS that do not need login credentials to access shared network drives on the NAS.

Most NAS i have looked into has some sort of login needed in order to access the shares set up (i.e. username: guest, password: guest), but I have a device (Microsoft media center extender) that uses a winlogin with a password that is hidden, so I need a NAS that has anonymous login to shares.

Will any of your products do that and if so which ones?

I have no experience with this but I was under the impression that if you enable guest login, you should be able to get this working. Should work on all models.

Use your Active Directory for access athentication on PRO devices och create a user account on both client an device that has the same credentials. Works perfect :-)

Dear customer,
YES, QNAP NAS products support anonymous login.

If you enabled the "guest login", then no username & password is needed to access the share.

By default, aonymous connection is only allowed on the "Public" share. However, you can create a new share in the administration and use the "Full Access" ("everyone" access rights).

Steps:
1. Login to Administration page
2. under "Access Right Management", click "Shared Folders"
3. click "New Share Folder"
4. give the new share a name, leave everything else unchanged, and then click "Next"
5. by default, select "Full Access", Check "RW" for "Guest Access Right" and then next.

Now you should be able to access this new share w/o a username and password in Windows.

Hope this helps. Sincerely,

Jason
