Couple questions on 4xx series and Raid

Postby schlange » Thu Nov 12, 2009 6:43 pm

Hey everyone,

I have a Qnap 209 Pro now. I have Raid 1 (Mirroring) and 1GB HDD in the box and the box is now full. I like the Raid 1 for the security of not losing my data and now I am where I need to acquire a bigger box. Thus I am looking at upgrades. But first I wanted to say what I have found to be a problem with my 209 version to hopefully ensure that is not the same in an upgraded version.

Problems with 209 Pro:
1. Often I get the homepage cannot be displayed any browser. I get part of the login screen but it is not rendered properly. This is resolved only be rebooting the device - it seems this happens when I have lots of torrents running on the download station
2. My PS3 is frequently gets a network error when streaming music or video from the nas. Even though the wireless signal strength is very high, I get some 4 letter network error issue.
3. When I have many torrents running, my entire network gets very slow for websurfing. I have a 50,000 kbps cable connection but it seems my router gets overwhelmed because even surfing a network drive on another computer is terribly slow. Is there a way to adjust this on the NAS torrent engine or in my router?

Desires for a new NAS:
1. Fix the problems above :P
2. 4 drive bays so I can expand the storage
3. I would like to have redundancy in the NAS (Raid 5)?
4. Support more media formats for streaming to PS3

Questions:
1. What would be the best RAID to setup the NAS with so nothing is lost if a disk crashes
2. What is the max size HDD (does it accept 1.5TB drives) that I can have with the 410 or 419 series NAS
3. Is there anything I can put onto the NAS to Stream more music formats?
1. Which

Hi schlange,
1. RAID 5 & 6 gives you best protection and performance.

2. max HDD size is 2TB, and compatible with many models and manufaturers.

3. may I know what kind of music format you want to use that's not compatible with your 209? FLAC?

4. Your router simply cannot sustain the heavy traffic caused by BT. The solution is to either get a better router (that can support hundreds or even thounds of sessions), or restrict your BT download speed/tasks in the Download Station (in "Set Config").

Hi schlange,
It's up to the media receiver/players to decode the format and playback them as the QNAP NAS does not perform transcoding.
Therefore, if PS3 cannot play a type of file format natively, then it's not supported.

Here are the media formats supported by TwonkyMedia (UPnP Server):
• .ASF - Windows Media Video (codecs: WMV video and WMA audio)
• .BMP - Bitmap Image
• .FLV, .F1V, .F4V - Standard Quality YouTube Video (codecs: Flash Video: Sorenson Spark H.263 video codec & MP3 audio codec)
• .GIF - Graphics Interchange Format
• .JPG, .JPEG, .JPE - Joint Photographic Experts Group image
• .MP3 - MPEG Audio Layer 3 (codec: MPEG Audio)
• .MP4 - High Quality YouTube Video (codecs: MP4: H.264 video & HE-AAC audio)
• .MP4 - MPEG-4 Video (codecs: Microsoft MPEG-4 v1, Microsoft MPEG-4 v2, Microsoft MPEG-4 v3 & ISO MPEG-4 v1
• .MPEG, .MPG, .MLV - MPEG-1 (codecs: MPEG-1 video & MP2 audio)
• .PNG - Portable Network Graphics
• .WAV - Linear Audio (codecs: Uncompressed PCM-encoded & ADPCM-encoded)
