Re: Qnap TS 509 - 5 bay NAS
TS-401T is a very old hardware design (2005) with old software base (only basic functions). i would call it a "pre turbo station area" model
so it's absolutely not comparable with the great QNAP products of today.
TS-509 will be MUCH better and faster than the 401. actually the TS-409 is already better in most areas ^^

Oh I see. Thanks for the explanation. I appreciate it a lot. Can't wait for the 'affordable' TS 509 soon.

How long will it be before these devices get so big/powerful/expensive, that it would be just as easy to build lets say a Mini ITX standard PC and put your favourite version of linux on it.
It's definatley getting close to the crossover point.
Is going to be interesting.

QNAP Team,
What is the forecasted release date for TS-509 ?
Is it for this week, end of this month, september... ?
I need this information for deciding what to buy : TS-409 or TS-509.

Re: Qnap TS 509 - 5 bay NAS
I Don't care about the cost, i want one bad. I'm deployed till at least mid-december, but i know it will be the first thing i get when i get back. Might as well have one loaded with 1tb disks....I'll even drive cross country to pick it up
i know i know....you prolly only do diskless systems...that's fine. But seriously i can guarantee a purchase of one when i get back, hope you guys are ready by then

D@mn it I've only just found this thread, one week after buying the TS-409. If I'd realized that the TS-509 was coming, I would have waited.

Re: Qnap TS 509 - 5 bay NAS
It looked like they had a pretty "working" model at whatever show it got previewed at. Not sure that qualifies it as vapor ware. It would be nice to have our admins and guys in the know drop in and give us some teasers though

Re: Qnap TS 509 - 5 bay NAS
don't worry guys... i guess more information will come very soon!
i'm not qnap staff, but i touched a working (pre mass production) TS-509 yesterday and end of this week it will be mine
it will beat ds508 easily when it comes to raw power i'm sure it will be worth to wait some weeks more
