Qnap TS 509 - 5 bay NAS

Hmm, I also just bought the 409 Pro, and is filling up my 4x1 TB Disks (RAID 5) with data.

Is it possible to take these 4 hard drives and just put them in the 509, and then it runs on that?
Or is it not possible to use the same hard drives without losing data?

I don't see why this wouldn't work. Isn't the 509 supposed to be MORE flexible - IE JBOD instead of exact disks? I would think it would work fine...Or will the 509 format the disks as part of the preparation?

Glad to hear reports that someone is getting one of these. Better start saving my pennies.

My cursor had been hovering the "Checkout" button on my 409 w/ 4 1tb drives @ newegg for about 20 mins.... figured i would check for new info first *whew* guess I'll hold off a few then.

Any idea on pricing yet? Just wondering how much more i need to set aside...

Is it me or does the 509 look a lot like the Thecus N5200 series? I was debating whether to go for QNAP or Thecus, but if QNAP aren't coming up with any designs on their own, I wonder what else they are copying?

Any good points to keep me swaying over to the dark side we know as Thecus? (Apart from the lovely people on the forum of course

)

I just looked at the specs on the Thecus N5200B PRO and if you can wait a week or two I think you will be pleased with the specs of the 509. It is a very cool device and there are more firmware/software enhancements planned that will make it even better.

Cheers Don. I have read that the 509 will have an intel m processor. Any more specs? (processor speed / model and ram size).

I can share what was announced at Computex Taipei 2008. The 509 has a 1.6 GHz Mobil Intel processor and 1 GB of DDR2 memory. The TS-509 Pro also comes with 2 LAN ports for load balancing, failover and Multi-LAN. Can't tell you much more.

the intel mobile processor is supposed to be a Celeron M @ 1,6GHz

Yeah pretty much what I read. I assume the celeron is used as it runs cooler than pentium. (and cheaper too

) I am quite anxious to get a NAS - my hard drives arrived today (2 x 1TB Samsungs) and I want to install them! Till now I have had my eye on the 409 Pro but something that packs a bigger punch like the 509 would be better of course.

Thanks for the info. I guess we'll just have to be a little patient and wait for the release.... should be any day now?

WOW 9999.0€ I was really looking forward to buying one till I saw that I'd need to take out a mortgage for one....LOL
