Two TS-869 Pro: Will this work?

Postby DrDave » Wed Jun 27, 2012 11:24 pm

Hello,

I was thinking of purchasing two TS-869 Pro boxes, one for Location-A and one for Location-B. I believe i can backup locally in Location-A and sync to the remote Location-B, over the internet.

Here is my question: Can I configure the boxes so that I an ALSO backup locally in Location-B and sync to Location-A.

All feedback is appreciated.

Yes, it's totally possible to have replications in opposite directions. You only need to make sure the folders are separated from each other.

Example:
  • The folder used for backups on the NAS in location A is replicated to a folder on the NAS in location B that could for example be named A-backup.
  • The folder used for backups on the NAS in location B is replicated to a folder on the NAS in location A that could for example be named B-backup.
No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

That's awesome! Thank you.

A related question. Since my initial backup in Location-A will be around 10TB, it would take years to replicate that to location-B. Could I start out by backing up in Location-A, and then replicating to the second box BEFORE I move that box to Location-B?

In other words, after doing a backup to Box-A, could I directly connect Box-B, replicate, and then move Box-B to Location-B, and then replicate over the Internet?

I know that that sounds a lot more complicated than it really is!

That would be the best way to do it unless of course you have gigabit links between sites.

Thank you for the reply...I'm a step closer!

I know that this is the pre-sales forum, let me ask this. When I first sync the boxes locally, would I simply plug both boxes into a gigabit switch and then sync, or would I plug the second box into the eSata port on the first box?

All pure network based - as these are all NAS devices, not DAS (direct attched storage) at all.

Thank you for the clarification.

A related question. If I connect an eSata device to the NAS, and I want to copy files from the NAS to the eSata device and I use my Mac and the Finder, will the data be copied back to my Mac, and then to the eSata device. I have a feeling that it will, and of course, that will slow down the copy-process - roughly speaking - by half.

For faster tranfsers NAS<->eSATA or NAS<->USB you can use the Web file Manager for example, instead of copy everything through the network.
