MS DFS support???

Postby h.roth » Fri Sep 05, 2008 9:22 pm

Hello,

we're considering buying a TS209 Pro II (or even the 409?) to boost performance on our multiuser (1-3) CAD-workstations. Each workstation accesses via Network the same database, consiting of heaps of small files and subfolder on a shared Network-Server harddisk (Transfer-Rates aren't too bad, but access time is too slow). The Domain Network is operated by Win2003 AD, including DFS.

I'd like to move the time-critical folder to the QNAP-NAS without the Network noticing just by modifying the DFS-Root. Does the NAS support DFS?

I know the Buffalo Terra Station does... :lol: ... but I'd like using my own harddrives.

Regards.

Yes, it does, but only by manual editing of the smb.conf .
To activate DFS add a line in this global section:
Code: Select all
[global]
host msdfs = yes

and activate a share like this
Code: Select all
[dfs]
comment = DFS
path = /share/HDA_DATA/DFS
msdfs root = yes

To create now a dfs link with
Code: Select all
ln -s msdfs:\\myserver\\datashare /share/HDA_DATA/DFS/mydata

Does this work with DFS-Replication?
We´re planning to set up a multi-location DFS-Replication with one W2k3 Server managing this all...
Planned are multiple TS239pro´ hosting the files for each location and they should now replicate their files (via vpn) within the dfs-root of the w2k3-server, so that all files would be accessable from everywhere.

every location should access their own files (former stored on the w2k3 server, so we hope for better performance) over their own ts239pro and if something would change in the files the nas should upload it to the master and the master should replicate it to the other nas´.

Would you say this should work?

example:

Server: NAS:
DFS-Root\loc1 --> Nas-loc1\data1 (files of location1)
DFS-Root\loc2 --> Nas-loc2\data2 (files of location2)

DFS-Server should host a complete copy of all the data.

Any ideas?

Hi,
I know the last Post is more than 2 years old, but can anybody provide an answear?
I would like to use DFS-Replication with my TS-412U and a windows 2008 server.

Is this possible or do I have to install cygwin / rsync at the windows server?

//edit---

Seems like it is not possible to do that.
Can anybody tell me what would be the easiest way to synch folders between the win2k8 server and the nas?

Has this been answered
does the qnap support dfs in a microsoft environment , or do you have to use a server with iscsi conection to qnap and rely on microsoft replication

QNAP supports only DFS without replication, you have to use a microsoft server to do this.

Thanks so the answer is to enable as per instructions in viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7883&p=264477#p264477
then use the DFS replication to replicate
ok
i take it that the windows server will need to have a iscsi connection or is this not necessary after dfs as above is enabled?
