Difference between 2GB and 8GB versions of TS-853?

Post by AdrianW »

Is the only difference between the two TS-853 models the amount of RAM (i.e. 2GB vs 8GB) ?

These models have just popped up on a few Australian retailer's sites now - but there's around a $230 difference between the two models.

But I can purchase two 4GB DDR3L modules can be purchased for around $90 - so is there any advantage to buying the 8GB model?

Yes, QNAP has SKU with 1 GB and 4 GB for the TS-x51, and SKU with 2 GB and 8 GB for the TS-x53.

Nobody here in charge of pricing for (any) market - that's why your earlier post was not answered. NAS pricing is not done on pure hardware BoM. Buying memory options from major server and computer makers is most likely much more expensive than what is the comparable option from the free market - where prices might be at the lower end to cover costs.

So, it's best just to purchase the cheaper model and upgrade the memory yourself.

I just need to wait a little longer for the WD Red 6TB drives to come down in price a bit more.

Hi

A very warm welcome to the Qnap community forum and I'm sure you'll have great fun with your new purchase. Search this forum and you'll find there are other threads on memory, including a useful thread about suitable memory for TS-x51 and TS-x53 series, here (I'm successfully using 2 x 4GB of the Kingston memory - in my TS-453 - that's linked to in that thread). The key thing to note is that it's the low voltage version you require for these particular new new Qnap models.

Bri :)

NB My new TS-453 is now fully up and running, and I'm currently using a Linux laptop drive a Win7 64 Pro VM (installed on the Qnap). I've even installed the free version ProXPN such that I can emerge in Dallas and buy something that's otherwise regionally restricted; most cool! :D

Will the Crucial 16GB CT2KIT102464BF160B RAM work in a TS-853A? Has anyone cofirmed this?
