I am confused about the differences between the x53 non-Pro and x53 Pro. Adding to the confusion is that the Pro model is under SOHO, the non-Pro is under SMB, which seems counter-intuitive.
I'm getting close to being a first-time QNAP customer, looking to replace an aged Windows Server 2003 system with hardware RAID 6 that serves as AD Domain Controller and storage for the household. I think probably the x53 family might best suit my needs, just unclear about the differences.
A different thread here says that the Domain Controller ability is only in the SMB line of systems. Is that true? And also apparently Storage Pools, but I have no idea what storage pools are: pointers to something I could read about would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Only TS-x51 and TS-x53 Pro Models exist - no non-Pro TS-x53. -> http://www.qnap.com/i/en/product/

Uggh. Well I blew it on that one. While I'm probably going to go with a 653, this question does still apply, but to the "TS-x70" vs "TS-x70 Pro", where the Pro is listed under SOHO.

Re: Differences between TS-x53 and TS-x53 Pro?
Comparison TS-670 / TS-653 / TS-670 Pro The community pushed QNAP to release the TS-x70 Pro worldwide (before it was available in some markets only) because we had ben concerned about the comparable low performance of the Intel Celeron G550 in the TS-x70 when it came to processing intensive applications like transcoding, encryption, and for HD Station, and by then the future possibility of the Virtualisation Station. For the majority of NAS operations (pure storage), the G550 is perfectly enough.

Thanks for the info. For what it's worth, I now have a shiny new TS-653 Pro. Files copying over now. Future questions will be in hardware/software and not presales
