Mac OSX Mountain Lion TimeMachine Fix

Hello all,

There is a known problem that TimeMachine does not work with Mac OSX Mountain Lion.
You will get the error oserror2 when trying to backup to your TimeMachine

I got the fix:

1. Open a terminal
2. Type in the following line: sudo tmutil setdestination afp://TimeMachine:password@192.168.10.200/TMBackup

(Password is your Timemachine password and the ip-address is your timemachine ipaddress (QNAP NAS disk ipaddress)

3. Open System Preferences
4. Click on TimeMachine
5. Choose select disk...
6. Select your TimeMachine backup disk (TMBackup)

Enjoy backing-up your Mac OSX Mountain Lion using the QNAP NAS Timemachine feature !!!

interesting even though i do not have that issue. I downloaded the release version of mountain lion and upgraded my imac and i was able to access my time machine backups on the qnap and continue to backup information to it with no problem.

did you by any chance installed any of the beta versions of mountain Lion?

Wouldn't it simply be easier to simply install QNAP Firmware v3.7.3? See: [Offical]3.7.3 for all

Well, the fix works fro me BUT the encryption cannot be enabled. Is there some setting to enforce the encryption? I looked int the tmutil command and could not find it.

I updated to 3.7.3 on the weekend with the result that it doesn't work for Lion and Mountain Lion.

Upgraded to 3.7.3 while still on lion, backed up then did the lion to ML upgrade. No issues at all with time machine, all works fine on ML

Yup ... The update to 3.7.3 broke it for Lion. It had been running great, now Lion cannot connect.

UPDATE: I just downgraded to 3.7.2 and it's working again. What's going on?

As far as mountain lion is concerned regarding Time Machine. the error, i believe, is with OS X, Not QNAP FW. it appears that you cannot mount two shares of the same server with two user names.

I have my 419ii setup with one username and one main share that is mounted and stays on the desktop for access. when i try to get Time Machine to find the other, it'll find the drive, allow you to enter the username/pw. once the first backup takes place, the NAS is no longer accessible. my theory is that because my personal share (with a diff Username) is connected.

this is my work around:

1. disconnect all share
2. add a username with a quota (1tb was my choice)
3. add a share for that user
4. mount that share with the afp://username:password@ip/newShareName
5. during the initial backup, i ran this command: sudo chflags hidden "/Volumes/Time Machine Backups"
6. after completion of the backup, i unmounted the "newShareName", and remounted MY share, with MY username.

now when TM does it work, it just mounts the "Time Machine Backups", not the newShareName. it does so with Time Machine Backups hidden, so i never see it. and just continually backups. It has quota of 1TB. i honestly dont see the need for the "backup" application for time machine? this process is not transparent for the regular user, but i dont' want to keep fighting with the Time Machine app.

is there any other features that i'm missing from the time machine app?

confirm. this work for me. as workaround conflict loginname.
but i change
>4. mount that share with the afp://username:password@ip/newShareName
$ sudo tmutil setdestination afp://<type_username>:<type_passwd>@<type_ip/<type_share_name>
and dont mount manually!!! (if mount manually finder frieze)
snowleopard work perfectly with smb protocol. today only afp

Nice if it works for you, but for me, this is a 'no-go' solution. If you are not used to working on the command line on a MacOS/linux system, you really have no idea what you are doing. For example, what do you (have to) do in case of a QNAP firmware upgrade and you should reverse (or delete) these previous commands?

For me, the QNAP firmware should work out-of-the box and the build-in functionality should be tested the latest/current OS versions of Windows, MacOS/linux.

SInce upgrading to Mountain Lion a week ago, I can not use the Time Machine functionality anymore, despite having installed firmware version 3.7.3 on my QNAPs.
I sincerely hope that QNAP fixes this with a quick firmware update.

I have tried the fix in the first post but it doesn't work.

I have a Qnap TS-239 Pro II on firmware 3.7.3 and my MacBook Pro is running OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1.

I can see my smb root share and after ages when clicking on it I can browse to it, but I am unable to map drives on it.

AFP shares do not show at all and I can't see the timemachine drive when i try and select a disk in TimeMachine.

I have restarted both devices several times, tried disabling and enabling both TimeMachine and Apple Networking on the NAS several times to no avail.

I was hoping the upgrade to 10.8.1 would have fixed this issue but alas no.

Scoured the net and not found any solutions.

Anyone have any ideas? Fine with command line etc.
