Backup to External USB Job keeps Terminated

Post by seh2000 »

Hi,

Got a TS-269Pro which I am pretty happy with.

As I am often long time abroad I wanted to have a backup of my files on the NAS.

I got one USB3.0 4TB external drive for this purpose.

I have the drive formatted as EXT4.

I got four directories I want to back up.

Created four individual job under External Backup using no filters and set to Replicate Now.

Three of the four jobs runs (Starts and Finishes), but the four job keeps going into the state Terminated.

I also tried to create one job with the four in same job, gave me same result.

The log file gives (at least for me no usable information):
2014/10/10 12:38:32] Job [Documents-->Documents] started.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] Synchronize files between a local folder and an external drive with volume ID: 18c27593-4cb8-4ae1-88ed-d0e43430cda8.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] The number of folder pairs = 1.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] Pair1 = [Documents, QNAPBackup/Documents].
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] Schedule type: Manually.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] The deleting extra files option is disabled.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] The checking data content option is disabled.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] The detecting sparse files option is disabled.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] The extended attributes option is disabled.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] Symbolic link files are included.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] The detail log is enabled with the maximum size 10 MB.
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] Maximum retry times: 3; Retry interval in seconds: 60; Connection timeout in seconds: 120; Current retry number: 0.
Then the first line says:
[2014/10/10 12:38:33] Create the "QNAPBackup/Documents/User Guides/Intego Internet Security Barrier/X5/Getting Started.app/Contents/Resources/Spanish.lproj/intego-manual.css" file.
Then follows some 264 lines and the last is this one:
[2014/10/10 12:38:34] Create the "QNAPBackup/Documents/User Guides/Intego Internet Security Barrier/X6/FileGuard Manual.app/Contents/Resources/Spanish.lproj/UserManual.webloc" file.

The three other jobs log files looks the same from begining to the first file to be copied:

[2014/10/10 12:15:49] Job [Applications-->Applications] started.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] Synchronize files between a local folder and an external drive with volume ID: 18c27593-4cb8-4ae1-88ed-d0e43430cda8.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] The number of folder pairs = 1.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] Pair1 = [Applications, QNAPBackup/Applications].
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] Schedule type: Manually.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] The deleting extra files option is disabled.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] The checking data content option is disabled.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] The detecting sparse files option is disabled.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] The extended attributes option is disabled.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] Symbolic link files are included.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] The detail log is enabled with the maximum size 10 MB.
[2014/10/10 12:15:49] Maximum retry times: 3; Retry interval in seconds: 60; Connection timeout in seconds: 120; Current retry number: 0.

While the end is different (because jon terminated):

[2014/10/10 12:29:34] The synchronization is finished.
[2014/10/10 12:29:34] Sync statistic: Total number of the folders: 3426. Total number of the files: 12108. Total number of the skipped files: 833. Total updated size: 38.08 GB. Average updating speed: 47.27 (MB/sec). Time elapsed: 13 minutes 44 seconds
[2014/10/10 12:29:35] Job finished.

I have tried to restart A) the job several times, B) recreated the job several times and C) restarted the 269Pro.

What is strange is the fact that 3 out of four jobs runs without any issue.

Appreciate any help!!
As a search at this forum did not really give me any clues (appoligize if I have over looked a post).

Hi folks,

I have a very similar problem as "seh2000/Sheen". The difference is that I am using a HFS+ formatted USB3 external drive, 4TB and errors I have encountered are:

(a) .Apple DB access denied due to permission
(b) .db01, .db02 ... etc permission denied

After encountering these errors, the backup station job synchronising to that folder always fails. In addition, disk utilities report that the HFS+ 4TB drive is corrupted and has to be repaired. Disk utilities was able to repair the external drive but after reattaching to QNAP NAS and testing affected backup station job, the same problem comes up and the external HFS+ 4TB drive is corrupted again.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Can anyone advice what protocol does "qsync" process use to synch with HFS+ formatted drive?

Hi again all,

I still urgently need your help, going overseas again in a few week!
3 of the 4 jobs runs perfect but the 4th still keeps failing!!!

atapqi => My external drive was first formatted in HFS+, where I had the same error. Then when I read that if external drive was not formatted in EXT format one could expect issues I reformatted, but still having the same problem with one job.

Steen, I had to resort to reformatting the external drive to NTFS. So far, we our Back Station jobs have not failed. Keeping our fingers (and toes) crossed. Hope this information will be able to help you to overcome the backup issues as an interim.

As a side discussion, from our experience, QNAP's AFP capabilities has much to be desired, they do not appear to be very keen to support OS X and iOS communities.

atapqi,
I forgot to mention I as well tried NTFS, same issue 3 jobs running OK , one job not.
I am in a mixed Windows and OS X environment, but all I do is to back up the QNAP it self. So my environment should not have any effect.

I got mine to work.

Formatted the external hard drive again and after a couple of fails, it finally backed everything up again... after about 2 days of solid copying.

Agree that platforms (environment) of the end users do not have effect on backing up QNAP NAS itself, however, the format of the external disk media determines the read/write protocols to be used on the backup destination. Our experience tells us that backup jobs from Backup Station uses "qsync" process to synchronise files between source and destination, suspect it is a QNAP variant of "rsync". Regardless, NTFS and HFS+ formatted drives will require different protocols and I do not know enough about "qsync" to be able to advice.

As a suggestion, you might want to try to use "rsync" from command shell to see if the backup of the directories will work, it might give you an idea about the cause of the failures.

In addition, NTFS may not be able to handle certain character sets, we encountered this problem when a team member used symbol character in a filename, it worked fine on his Mac and the NAS's shared folder but that file could not be backed up to a NTFS formatted external hard drive. Thought you might want to know.

Hi atapqi,

Good to know and that i properly why I read somewhere that if not in EXT format then one could expect problems.

I will try the command shell option, even that I am not too familiar with using the command line.

Thanks for the info on characters, can be there is an "issue" in one or more files...

Update:

I could not try Rsync as I only got one QNAP NAS.
I could try RTTR, but got the same result, job terminates.

I seem to have the same or a very similar problem:

I am on SS-439 under QTS 4.1.2, which is running as a 4 x 0.5TB RAID5. The external device is a 1 TB WDC WD10JFCX-68N6GN0 with a NTFS, attached via eSATA, being powered with two USB connectors. On that device I have previously successfully backed up a number of directories, using a Backup Station and the aforementioned configuration.

I am now trying the exact reverse. However, every job terminates a few moments after it has been started. The state of the job is "Terminated". The log of the job does not show any peculiarities - sometimes files are being copied for a few seconds, sometimes none of the files are copied.

If I try to do the same thing using the File Station, it copies for a much longer time, but then apparently also breaks up, not copying all the files.

The issue is now becoming extremely important for me, since I have previously reorganized my QNAP device from 2 x 2 mirroring drives into a 4 drives RAID5 and am now trying to get my NAS content back.

Is there any way out of this mess?

Edit: In NAS there are 4 x 0.5TB RAID5 (not 0.5GB, as previously written).

  1. Update your Firmware to QTS 4.1.3 Build 20150217
  2. Backup your Linux NAS to a Linux Ext4 filesystem on your USB Drives.

Firstly, thanks for such a prompt reply.

Re.1: During last several days I have tried many times to update to QTS 4.1.3 Build 20150217, either as a live update, or via a pre-downloaded image. To no avail - QTS does not let me do it (and itself always reports that 4.1.2 is the last available version). I have no clue what can I do about it.

Re.2: Currently, my one and only backup of my previous NAS content is on this one external drive, which is in NTFS. Do I understand it correctly, that I should transfer it to an external drive formatted in Ext4 and then try to transfer it from there to NAS? If this is so, can I format an Ext4 drive under Windows (which version)? Sorry for this naive question(s). I am pretty tied to Windows.

You can always download "current" Firmware on the TS-410 Firmware Download page. (I'd recommend "bookmarking" this page in your Web Browser so you can check it frequently. You will find QTS 4.1.3 Build 20150217: TS-410_20150217-4.1.3.zip listed there.

If you check the "Change Log" for QTS 4.1.3 Build 20150217, you will discover QNAP had made extensive improvements to USB/eSATA support in this Firmware version/build.

The concept isn't difficult. Backup Linux devices to Linux filesystems. Backup Windows machines to your NAS via the network, or to NTFS drives attached directly to your Windows machine. You might find it beneficial to invest in an eSATA/USB Drive Dock for this purpose, so you can use "loose" drives for your Backups via all your devices:

Image
I paid less than $50.00USD for my Dock. I recommend them. (These docks work with both 2.5" and 3.5" drives).

Your NAS can easily format Ext3/4 Filesystems on your external drives. Check out the "External Storage" section of the fine manual. (If you can handle a Mouse, you can easily format Ext3/4 drives using the Admin WebUI on your NAS).

Image

The external storage device can be formatted as EXT3, EXT4, FAT32, NTFS, or HFS+ (Mac only) file system. Click “Format” and select the option from the drop-down menu.

Your TS-410 does not support USB3.0, but your PC probably does, so I would recommend getting an eSATA/USB3.0 Dock, even though your TS-410 NAS only supports USB2.0.

Suddenly your NAS is a SS-439? Your Forum profile still says TS-410, so that is what I provided answers for.

Let me try again.....

You can download QTS 4.1.3 Build 20150217: SS-439_20150217-4.1.3.zip directly from the SS-439 Pro Firmware Download page. (I'd recommend "bookmarking" this page in your Web Browser so you can check it frequently.

Please review the rest of the information previously provided your TS-410. Please consider updating your Forum profile to reflect your SS-439 Pro.
