restore from a previous Time Machine backup

Hello folks
I did a Time Machine up all my files onto my TS-451, then did a reinstall of OSX. I reconfigured TM, and started a new backup. Fine. Now that everything is running, I want to restore files that were backed up before I formatted my OSX harddrive, but Time Machine won't display any previous backups. How do I restore backed up files after reformatting and reinstalling OSX?
