backup ts209 to usb harddisk. how do i view backup files?

Postby mentos » Sun Aug 16, 2009 11:35 am

kindly help! i have an usb external device (seagate free agent go - 500gb portable harddisk) - formatted in the QNAP application to "NTFS" and status is "ready"

in the backup to "external drive", i have set backup to "usbdisk1", "scheduled backup", and copy options = "copy". i set the time every week on a saturday. i have chosen to backup 3 folders.

the current backup status is 'ready" and the last backup result is "backup completed" (the last backup took about 3hrs). system logs look normal (ie no errors)

my question is how do i view these backup files? because within vista windows explorer, i can view my "usbdisk1" as a folder. however, i can only see one backup folder name but i cannot see any files in it. i also cannot see the other 2 folders.

in folder access management, for "usbdisk1", i have set full access for "guest access right".

can anyone help to see why i cant see those backup files?!

You can check if the files and folders are really there using the Web File Manager.
If you can see them that way, the problem is probably between the file/folder attributes and the way Windows deals with them. You can use WinSCP to change them (basically, to see the files on your NAS in Windows, change them from 777 to 766). Search for it on the forum, the problem of invisible files in Windows Vista and the solution using WinSCP have been described many times before.

thanks for your response! i cannot see any files in Web File Manager.

also i checked my usb disk. it's Total / Free size: 465.76 GB / 350.59 GB

when i go to "access right management" >"share folders", it only reports "usbdisk1" as size 4kb!!

wonder why i cannot see the files in web file manager?!?!

Have you tried connecting the external drive to your PC? As it is NTFS formatted, you should be able to see if anything is there.
You can also check for the files on your NAS with WinSCP.

the scheduled backup ran again and this time, i could see the files in web file manager (and i could view my files from windows vista)

i had not done any changes to any qnap settings so i cant explain why it works now!

good that it does but will report again if there's a future issue

many thanks

Ciao Mentos!

I have a similar situation.

configuration: down rear USB port: installed external USB 2.0 drive WD 500gb with NTFS used for daily incremental backup: all ok! up rear USB port: installed hp designjet hp500: all ok! front USB: installed Seagate Desktop External Drive 3.5" USB 2.0 500gb (ST305004EXD101-RK).

NAS (TS209proII) find the drive, i can format it, i can copy and use the drive but (random) some or all folders disappears and (sometimes) some folder reappear. I also tried to connect to other USB ports. I tried with file system NTFS and EXT 3. I tried with a powered USB hub. But always with the same result.
I contacted support QNAP and, after some suggestions to no avail, I was asked to install TeamViewer.

Hi, Dts. I'd read your reply to Mentos, and I'm interested to Hp Designjet 500.
I want to share in lan this plotter with qnap, but there isn't in the compatibility list.
How you had connected this Plotter? Did you had any problem with drivers or sharing?
I want to share with a MAC and Windows.
Could you tell me your experience?

Thank you

I get exactly the same issue and doing a CHMOD 777 does not fix the issue! I can't see the files on any Windows workstations but can see them using the Web File Manager. The only way to fix it is to copy all files and you should be able to see the duplicates, then obviously delete the old files. This is not acceptable! Please tell us how we can fix this!
