Backup to eSata/USB fails on TS-459!

Postby Jufjansen » Mon Jun 25, 2012 5:45 am

Hi there,

Is anyone familiair with the problem that the QNAP backup to external disks (e.g. eSata or USB) doesn't work. It stops after 4 GB from 675GB... My firmware(3.2.4 Build 0315T) is a bit old, but ever since I want to upgrade my firmware it is strongly adviced to backup al the info on the NAS. Wich now looks well impossible....

Any help would be appreciated

Maybe a filesystem (like FAT) used on the external disk that can't cope with the files you try to back up?
No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

Nope I'm using a freshly formatted NTFS disk. I also can't find any usefull info in the system logs.

Did you format the disk with the NAS or a PC? Some users on the forums have reported better results with NTFS disks formated by the NAS.

A better option would be to format the disk with either ext4 or ext3 which are native linux formats and more reliable with linux than NTFS.

Mmm ok. Ext3 or 4 would be indeed my next option. Try that tomorrow.

Then I would think that you have an incompatible external dock/enclosure or maybe a bad disk.

To check which it is, format the disk in Windows but ensure that the 'Perform a quick format' option is unchecked. The format will take a lot longer but will be more thorough in checking the functionality of the disk. In a quick format [to save time] only minimal checking is done so it is possible to format a defective disk and it appear to be good.

As far as I know there isn't. There is a driver available to read ext4 in Windows.

Priceless. Didn't think of that, but it might be an incompatible one. It's not on the list of Qnap. So far a wasted €120,-

In you subject you mention USB and eSATA. If it always fails at 4GB into the transfer on either interface I would tend to go for a defective disk. An incompatible disk I would expect to be a bit more random in its failure point.

Personally I use an IcyBox IB-111StUS2-Wh Docking Station, which can connect by eSATA or USB 2, and bare drives appropriate to the size of the backup job. However you do need something to store the bare drives in when not in use. It is not on the compatibility list but it works for me.

A docking station is simply a "bus extention", as such there isn't a compatibility question when using them. The dock doesn't matter, the drive however does. Try to always use "compatible" drives with your docking station. The docking station itself should not be important, as long as the drive attached to it is compatible.

Maybe with an eSATA dock but at least with USB there are many examples of incompatible products. The mentioned product is also a USB-dock so compatibility does matter.

Personally I use a combined eSATA/USB 2.0 external enclosure: Icy Dock MB559US-1S, on the Qnap compatibility list under the name of Cremax.

I also use a Icy box IB-110StU3-B USB 3.0 dock, not on the compatibility list but it also works.

I stand corrected. I was actually referring to eSATA, which is in fact nothing more than a bus extension of the existing SATA bus. USB is indeed a completely different story. My TS-419P+ supports eSATA (3GB/s) and USB2.0 (0.48GB/s). Given this choice, I only use eSATA. (Simple Math).

Thank-you for catching this. It was not my intent to provide misinformation. (It escapes me why anyone would use USB2.0 when eSATA is available). In fact I would even prefer eSATA to USB3.0 (if available).
