Please give us status on MKV-problem

Postby ambjorn-swe » Wed Jan 20, 2010 12:21 am

Hey QNAP-personel!!

We are a bunch of people who has spent around 300 euro on a device that is for the time beeing pretty much useless for us. If i wanted a device that could handle SD-video such as xvid/divx, youtube etc i would go for XBMC on an old X-Box or purchase a cheap device on my local supermarket. The reason that we purchased this device i that we want to watch HD-video flawlessly. The specifications cleary says that this device should be able to handle mkv-format, a filecontainter that is nowdays is a defacto standard. Well, the NMP-1000 can handle around 70-80% of the mkv-videos for the time beeing, this is a big shame since my three year old tvix4100sh handled 100% of my mkv-videos flawlessly and the ff/fd functionallity was perfect. I tested the new Western Digital TV HD live player a couple of days ago, this device is around 99 euro and it plays all the files flawlessly, youtube works as a charm and the ff/fd functionallity is perfect on this device aswell. For the time beeing i´m very dissapointed at the NMP, it feels more like NAS with some mediafunctionallity than a mediaplayer with NAS-functionallity. You at QNAP must understand that this is in fact a major major issue for many of your customers. When i pay extra for a premium product such as the NMP i expect service/support and perhaps the most important thing....keep an open dialogue with your customers. PLEASE let us know what is happening with this problem, dont just ignore us.

Some threads regarding this issue below, remember that it is only a small percentage of your customers who reports this kind of problems.
Most of the people doesnt say anything and stays dissapointed with their for the time beeing uselss product.

Don't exaggerate too much. It is a problem for people who download HD content from the internet.
At home, my NMP-1000 plays my files fine, these include HD content I create myself (mts) and DVD rips of my own discs.

I don't say there's no problem, but to state that it is a MAJOR MAJOR issue for many customers is a bit over the top....

well petur the major issue here is that we spent 300+++ euros for a device that should cost 150 max! QNAP support should have been the added value but honestly until now it's far from being professional!

I'agree.

This is a media player!!!! The first and general functionality is MEDIA PLAYER. I expect this functionality must be correct. NAS feature is not important for most of us (I don't care I can create "hundreds" users when NAS speed is around 5Mb/s). But I'd like to play my MKV's (lot of problems) with subtitles (another bug) w/o any problem, and I cannot.
(viewtopic.php?f=176&t=24962 - my new C-200 can play all content!!!!)

Yesterday I've got another media player C-200 and I have NO PROBLEM with any of my file (sound and picture is always ok!!!!!).

No answer shows us what great support do we have, or just they have no idea what is wrong. I give you some information.

Please try to use this tool (http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/) to rewrite your mkv file .
I used this to add subtitles to mkv or remove useless audio tracks or subtitles. What I found when I rewrote my file - Qnap was able to display mkv corectly (before wasn't!!!!).

So what is wrong Qnap Team? Don't force us to find this before you will do it.

Seriously QNAP people give us some info about what is going on! I recently bought a TS 259 Pro NAS and it's fantastic but NMP 1000 needs lot of work and this lack of information is not QNAP style at all!
please jason or anybody else tell us you are working for us and what is going on.
thank you in advance

Can't tell you more than QNAP is working hard implementing the newer Sigma Designs libraries. This will certainly take some more time...

Jimmy - can you please give a statement to the loyal QNAP NMP-1000 customers? Failed to get in touch with you the last days, due to the different time zones.

Hello,
Jimmy has forwarded the MKV compatibility problem to our engineers and we are working on it now.
If you can provide us the download links of your problematic MKV file(s), it should help greatly. Please PM me the download link(s).

thanks

Gigabit isn't really required as the NMP-1000 doesn't even saturate 100mbit, and 100mbit is more than enough for streaming anyway.
