Brainstorm... Old grey cells tell me that certainly elder OS X builds support only read from an NTFS file system. To enable writing to an NFTS file system, third-party applicaitons and drivers were required. Somewhere I remember a hack for Snow Leopard permitting NTFS read and write, at the risk of sosme Kernel panic effects. Dr. Google should help.
For Lion, only third-party NTFS drives ie. by Tuxera or Paragon could help.
Sorry, all the OS X systems I have access here at hoe have (commercial) NTFS drivers installed, so I was not really aware this is not a plain OS X feature.
