Mediaplayer with FLAC for QNAP TS-109 Pro

Postby tom-1 » Mon Sep 03, 2007 8:17 pm

Hallo,
i have a new QNAP TS-109 Pro with firmware 1.1.1 Build 0824T (Twonky 4.4.2).

I want to play or stream audio files coded with FLAC (ogg vorbis or mp3 are no options for me) from my 109Pro.

(1) What for a stand alone player (HiFi like, not a computer) with FLAC support can i take?
(i know http://www.twonkyvision.de/Products/Two ... vices.html)

(2) It is possible that the 109Pro automatic FLAC to WAVE transcoded (for clients without FLAC support)
- how http://www.twonkyvision.de/Download/Add-ons/index.html ?

thanks - tom

hi Tom
I'm interested in the FLAC format, but I'm not familiar with that.
what's the format looks like? (*.mp3, *.wma) where I can find some sample file from Internet?

by the way, I don't think TS-109 is capable to hanlde the transcoding. If somebody can share how to add the transcoding program i will also be very interested.

Cheers

Hi, the file-extension is *.flac
Samples? I don't know. Make it self - no problem:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flac#Encoding

Functioned the Ziova CS505 with the QNAP TS-109 Pro?
(the 30th device from http://www.twonkyvision.de/Products/Two ... vices.html)

I want to stream FLAC from my TS109pro :(

I have the same question, as I visited the website of twonky server, I noticed that a FLAC -> WAV transcoding plug-in may help. But they provided only few pre-compiled plug-in for Win 32/ Linux X86 and Linux PPC.

I wonder if Qnap support have ever ported Flac->WAV plug-in already, if they did, I wish they can release it or include it in the future firmware update.

Dear tom-1 & jaensch:
Thanks for your input. I did some quick study. Sorry I'm not a music expert.. (Even I got several gadgets at home including Slim Devices, DMA, PSP,...becuase it is needed for my work)

As far as I know the "Foobar" seems a good program to make the FLAC format music, however it is true that most of the media players support WAV in stead of FLAC.
Regrding the concern I'm checking with Twonky.
But so far I guess it is hard for NAS to handle the transcoding but I will try to evaluate it and ask for the availability.

Cheers

Hi,
Please refer to the information provided by Twonky.

The FLAC transcoder needs lots of CPU power, the less computing power of an embedded platform will be an issue.
Besides, currently it is hard to cross compile it to a number of platforms. the FLAC transcoding capability on NAS platform will not be available offecially in short term.

Sorry if this cannot fully answer yor question.

Cheers.

Hi,
today it was delivered my Ziova CS505.

The QNAP twonky server in my QNAP TS-109pro works with him, also with (nativ) FLAC coded audio files. Firmware 1.1.1 Build 0824T (Twonky 4.4.2).

Other media services (slimserver or other) were not activated. No mp3 or wav files in the directory.

This TS-109pro function is very POSITIV. :D
No answer in the QNAP support forum is very NEGATIVE.

-> Which network-media-player still function with FLAC and the TS-109pro (without slimserver or)? I can't buy all player myself and test.

My Pixelmagic Mediabox 100 supports flac files shared by Twonky. (My other network media player, Kiss DP-600, does not support flac.)
TS-109 Pro (Seagate ST3500630AS EXT3)
TS-439 Pro (4x WD10EADS RAID5 EXT4)
