Block-based LUN support incremental LUN backup?

Post by csarli »

Hi,

As I see in the Firmware-update: QNAP TS-xx0/xx2/xx9 4.1.2 build 1219

Storage Manager:
Adds block-based LUN support for LUN backup. (For SMB firmware, TS x69, x70, x79, x80, IS-400.)

Is this LUN backup support the incremental backup?

You can't do an incremental Backup on a Block device. If you want incremental Backup, that is the responsibility of whatever "guest" Operating System is installed within the LUN. The NAS merely provides the space. What you do with it is entirely up to you.

You can make "Snapshots" of your LUNs, but these are not incremental at all. The NAS has no knowledge of what you put "inside" the LUN, regardless of whether is a Block-based LUN or the older "file" based LUN's.
