how do you fit a pcie x8 card into the TS-563?

Post by dwaynek »

the TS-563 has a pcie x4 pin slot yet some of their dual port expansion cards listed as recommended cards have a pcie x8 pin configuration. how is an x8 card supposed to fit into a x4 slot?

Because of the ie. the Emulex OCE11102-xx an 8x PCIe card which does fit mechanically and electrically in the NAS 4x slot - all you need is the QNAP specifc bracket.

Quickly searched the net ... http://www.simply.reviews/qnap-ts-563-nas-review/
The TS-563 is certified for a wide range of 10GbE adapters and we fitted an Emulex OCE11102-NM fibre adapter. This is an 8X PCI-Express card which will fit in the appliance’s 4X slot but you must source QNAP’s proprietary mounting bracket for your choice of 10GbE card.
Don't worry - it's confusing. As per the specs, electrically and physically, it's an x4 ... the point is that they solder a PCIe x4 connector with an "open end", permitting to accommodate the longer PCB card connector.

It's well visible here on the TechPowerUp TVS-463 review PCB picture:
QNAP x63 mainboard - open PCI connectors.PNG
Noted you can spot the PCB through the open U end of the connector? The to the right is the expansion slot. Theoretically (and for some usage very practical), you can open up the end of the connector of a PCIe x1 slot, and plug an x4, x8, or x16 card ... driver permitting, it will run as x1. Cool, eh? Enjoy!

Regards,
-Kurt.
