QNAP High Latency with Win 7

Post by ashu928 »

I have a QNAP TS-221 connected to an 8 port unmanaged gigbit switch and the switch is connected to a Billion 7800VDPX modem, I have a Win7 Desktop PC connected to the same switch, networked printer and a laptop (some times wireless), this setup has been working fine for over a year with no issues.

For the last few days I have been experiencing packet loss and high latency issues at random times during the day. I use outlook and an accounting software which is located on my NAS accessed via the share drives. When I have my ping going on the NAS box, it shows no issues and when the latency is high (last few minutes) I cannot access my NAS box (via share location or \\NASBOX) at all.

to resolve the latency problem I changed network cable from PC to and NAS box bypassing the switch and directly connected to the Billion 7800vdpx modem and it makes no difference? I have updated the firmware to the latest which is 4.1.2

Can someone please shed some light on this what is going on.

Thanks

do you have heavy outgoing traffic from the NAS at all?

If you can please provide some more information on your setup from this link below so we can try to diagnose the fault more thoroughly:

Your Operating System you are using to access your NAS. Win7
NAS model: TS-221
Firmware Version/Build numbers 4.1.2 / 1229
Network Setup (ie Single Port or Port Trunking) Single Port
If Port Trunking is present please specify (choose correct one): n/a
Balance-rr (Round-Robin) n/a
Active Backup: Active NAS
Balance XOR: N/A
Broadcast: n/a
IEEE 802.3ad (Dynamic Link Aggregation) n/a
Balance-tlb (Adaptive Transmit Load Balancing) n/a
Balance-alb (Adaptive Load Balancing) n/a

I have a basic home setup, no there is no high traffic going out from NAS. see attached ping replies when pinging to NAS from desktop PC. Intermittently the latency is too high and then normal, and when it is abnormal I am unable to access shared folders.

NAS and PC directly connected to Billion 7800vdpx modem.

I am unable to attached files with .txt and .doc file to this thread.

When the latency is at its highest are you also using outlook or the accounting software?

out of curiosity how many items do you have in Outlook? which version of outlook are you using?

what type of files are on the NAS that Outlook is using? PSTs?

we have an accounting software (MYOB) and Outlook 2013 with only 1 pst, both the files stored on NAS. Even when we are not using outlook and MYOB we experienced high latency for a short duration.

Just curious as to why you have your pst files on the mad rather than the local machine.

Microsoft quotes:

Other behaviors of .pst files over WAN and LAN links.

all operations take longer.

Write operations can take approximately four times longer than read operations.

Outlook has slower performance than the Exchange Client.

Hi

We have been experiencing this on our network following a disk upgrade on the TS-569L.

Previously the systems was running on 5 x Seagate Constellation 2 TB disks (ST32000645ns), and spreadsheets opened fine.

Following an upgrade to 5 x Seagate 6TB Enterprise disks (ST6000VN0001), and spreadsheets now experience a delay in opening.

The spinning circle carries on for about 1 minute, and then eventually opens; same thing happens when closing the spreadsheet.

The NAS shows a spike in latency when the spreadsheet is closed and then again when closed.

I have confirmed that the network is not the cause.
