USB Drive Not Seen [SOLVED]

Post by Lentilboy »

Hi all,

I am using a QNAP TS-112 with the latest firmware installed and cannot seem to get the USB HDD connected to either the front or rear usb ports to be visible.

I have checked the drive on my Mac and it is functioning normally, however when trying to set up backup it isn't visible.

I have read around and run commands #lusb and #dmesg which gives the following information. I am a novice here so if there is any other information needed please let me know and I will investigate and provide information back. Im using a Hitachi 1TB Tourno external drive formatted as ExFAT.

Code: Select all

Hello Kevin,

Welcome to QNAP NAS Community Forum!

exFAT is a proprietary file system, requiring expensive licencing - and is not available on the QNAP NAS therefore.

Curious why you've chosen exFAT for this HDD - is it used also on other systems not supporting the much more complete NTFS?

Hi Kurt,

Thanks for the response, it was formatted as that out of frustration. I should have explained it was working previously and then stopped. I wondered if there was a problem with the drive so erased it and then when it wouldn't work tried different file systems. Bearing in mind I am working from a MAC what file system should i format with?

Best wishes

I reformatted the drive as NTFS. Unfortunately the drive still isn't visible as an external drive.....

Any other suggestions?

Best wishes

Latest firmware - would that be 4.1.2 or 4.1.3? Probably best if you can state the version and the build. I had a USB issue appear (could not see the device in Virtualization station, although DMESG confirmed it loaded ok), raised a ticket, and QNAP said to install 4.1.3 since that apparently addresses a number of USB issues. Just about to check it out.

The question was for the version number and the build date. There have been multiple builds of 4.1.2 and those trying to help you here still don't know what firmware you're running.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

Apologies, the firmware version is actually 4.1.3 build 0217. (20150217)

Many thanks

Does look like the USB desice is not detected at all. Unplug and replug - then run these commands (slightly changed) again:

Code: Select all

lsusb -v
Post everything.

Code: Select all

dmesg
The last 20..30 lines are sufficient here.

Hi there,

Thanks for all your help with this, in the end I completed a low level format of the USB drive in question and this solved the problem. The drive is now working, seen by the nas and has successfully completed a back up. Not sure why the issue occurred or whether it could have been solved a different way but would be interested as to why the drive was visible on a MAC and a PC but not by the NAS.

Thanks
