Hi there,

Our QA dept is verifying the compatibility of multiple storage connections via the USB hub. Will announce the results in the near future. Stay tuned.

Can you verify the compatibility of esata Boxes with multiple discs too?

e.g. Staroom U6-2S-S2

1) 1 or more USB drives connection to one USB port (USB Hub)
2) mulitple disks enclosures connection to one USB port
3) mulitple disks enclosures connection to eSATA port

Any Updates?

I don't think it's possible because I can't get my Cooler Master external USB disk to work with my TS-209.
My Metal Gear Box USB Drive and Maxtor OneTouchIII works fine so I think the problem with my Cooler Master XCraft Drive is because of the inbuilt USB hub.

I, too, would REALLY like to know if the eSATA connection in the TS-101 and TS-109 is SATA PM (Port Multiplier) compliant. I have found a 5 port in/1 port out SATA hub based on the SiI3726 chip and it supports FIS-based and command-based switching SATA host controllers. As I understand it any SATA2 port is PM compliant but I cannot find on the Qnap website whether the eSATA port is SATA2 compliant (some websites say it is though).

As for a USB hub connected to the NAS, it appears to work just fine. I am using a cheap, USB 2.0 four port hub connected to my TS-101 and have had several USB external HDDs connected and all have been recognized by the TS-101. Currently I have just one external HDD through the hub. Data transfer is slower than a slug when more than one HDD is used but that's to be expected. I got it for future expansion but I would rather expand using the SATA hub even though it is expensive.

Qnap, please let us know!

Hi all,

As there are so many usb hubs around and we can't test them all but of all the usb hub we tested they appear to work just fine.

from our specification we can confirm that we can support up to 6 device from the first level expansion.

and if you hook up another hub of the first hub only the first device is supported.

As for esata hub, sorry we don't support them at the moment

sorry for the long delay in reply to this guys.

But andy, can you confirm if the hardware supports it? Is it just a firmware compatibility thats not there?

I had just come across this: http://www.sataport.com/ And something like that would be fantastic to really extend the device.

Any devices connected to the hub like UPS and printers or just drives?

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

I haven't finished reading the thread but i'm in a hurry. I asked support and they unequivicably stated that it was NOT supported on esata, however I connected my TS-469L to my 8 bay tower (two esata connections) and it does indeed recognize and use multiple drives on just one cable.

I don't like that I can't include their usage in storage volumes/etc, but that may be for the best since performance could be hampered if it blindly allowed it. That being said it might be possible to go manual and mess with the LVM underneith if desired.

I have some questions of my own I am looking for answeres to:
1. Does qnap use command based or FIS for esata? (I presume it's command based, but I honestly don't know and support isn't giving me correct answers)
2. is it possible to trick/deceive the qnap software to include the drives in their system
3. what cavets should i consider when utilizing multiple external drives on one connection by tricking it, manually configuring, or even just by using them at all.

i have already run into some challenges with using esata, but they are along using them the right way (for instance, I created a symlink to export a folder's storage to a dedicated esata drive, but this didn't/doesn't work (correctly) for NFS and the qnap host at the same time.
