2TB Drives TS109 - TS209 (User Poll)

Postby ukez » Tue Jun 01, 2010 7:12 pm

I'm getting bored of waiting for an official QNAP rep to say whether a 2TB drive, other than the WD 2TB brand will work in our TS109 & TS209 devices.

If any of you have gone out and bought a 2TB drive that isn't listed on the official QNAP compatibility list for the TS109/TS209, can you post your findings here please. I just want to make it easier for TS109/TS209 users to find out from other members.

For now, I'm just going to ask if it ''Worked'' or ''Didn't work'' to keep it nice and simple.

I'm aware compatibility can change with firmware updates, so I haven't locked your vote, you can re-vote if that's the case.

(Note: As this isn't official, follow this information at your own risk, Please see official compatibility list here) http://www.qnap.com/pro_compatibility.asp

I don't recognize the Hitachi drive you've listed in the poll but two Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 (HDS722020ALA330) in a TS-209 Pro II (firmware 3.1.0 Build 0708T) works very well for me.

Edit: Now I have voted as well :)

I am also curious about this. I recently got the Samsung F3 2 TB and will be picking it up this week to test with my 109. Hopefully it will work well. Has anybody had experience with this drive?

I've bought a Samsung 2TB for my 209, i'll try it by itself and if it works I'll buy another one and set up RAID1 ...

The Samsung works like a charm and much cooler. My old Seagate ran at 50+ degrees. This one runs around 40+ degrees. What's the recommended range?

I'm not sure but my old Hitachi HDP725050GLA360 GM4O's run @ 39°& 40°

I'm glad the Samsung's work, I haven't tried mine yet.. I'll keep you posted.... (thanks for your input by the way)

Yes, when idle, the Samsung runs a cool 39 degrees. I ran diagnostic tests via SMART complete test and Check Bad Blocks test, and the HD passed with flying colors. However, when I try to "Check Now" for the "Current Disk Volume Configuration : Logical Volumes" table, I get an error stating:
"Level: Error [SATA Disk]
Examination failed."

Do you you or any of the QNAP admins know why this error occurs and how to resolve this?

I'm just installing mine now (on firmware TS-209_3.1.0_Build0708 @ Raid 1), I'll see if I get the same error message.. Its going to take a while though as I have to configure them as RAID1.. I'm starting in the next 5 minutes..wish me luck, its going to be a hit or miss lol

Quick update 1: I started my drive set-up on Fri Jun 04, 2010 10:00 am (via the web browser login) / It is now Sat Jun 05, 2010 10:00 am and the 2x Samsung's are still showing as ''Initializing...'' A whole 24hrs so far :(

Quick update 2: OK I had a problem trying to set up my raid initializing the drives via the web browser login (Do not do it this way with these drives). The drives just show as "initializing..." forever and it doesn't actually configure the drives or sync them.

I've now resorted to resetting my TS209 device via its rear button and used the "QNAP Finder" applications wizard to configure my device. So far so good.. and I've logged back in to the web GUI and can now see the Samsung 2TB drives are now syncing.... Once complete i'll run the hard drive tests under HDD SMART. :D

Quick update 3: My Samsung's synced in around 8.5 hours, Its a painful wait especially when you've then got hundreds of gigs to transfer to them after the sync is out the way. Anyway, so far so good. the basic tests are all green (thumbs up) :) . Once I've got all my data on to them I'll update my post again with some more results.

Thanks for your suggestion "Munna2002"

For the moment all I can say is with these Samsung drives along with a cleaned rear fan fitted with a anti-vibration 70mm fan gasket has reduced the noise levels of my TS209 Pro II dramatically and the performance of my new drives compared with my old Hitachi are brilliant. So far I'm happy.. :D

I ran the rapid and full tests and everything is working fine, no errors. I' will monitor the logs over the next couple of weeks and update my results. :D
