Seagate ST2000DL003?

Post by GazMan999 »

Hi everyone!

I'm very new to the NAS community but I've been reading up about the various units on offer and I've now bought a TS-859 Pro+.
I'm assuming that this unit is quite new as it is not included under the listing for compatible hard drives.

However, I'm now obviously looking for hard drives to fill my 859 and I've come across the ST2000DL003 by Seagate. This drives seems pretty impressive performance wise, with 6 Gb/s and 64MB of cache, especially for the price (currently about £83 each from Insight).

What I would like to know is has anyone used these drives and are they compatible with the 859 Pro+? I assume the compatibility between the 859 is the same as with all the other x59 units?

Any help or advice gratefully received.

Cheers!

The SEAGATE ST2000DL003 hard disk seems to be fully compatible with the QNAP devices.

What about previous model QNAP's like the TS-109 II and TS-210???

I need 2x 2TB Drives for the TS-210 (Raid 1) and 1x 2TB Drives for the TS-109 II

As the "ST32000542AS" Has been set to "End of life" status. Has the "ST2000DL003" been tested on the older NAS models?

thanks

I too am curious...I am currently search for 4+1spare for my 459 pro+.......can't figure out which way I should go....was thinking about those Samsungs....but these seagates sound pretty nice....too bad they are "green" drives....I am sure the manufacturer found a way to stick it to us RAID wannabe users....

I am interested in this drive for a possible 239 Pro II+. Its not listed in either the business or consumer compatibility list. I also note its a green drive and my experience with WD Greens on my 209 Pro was dismal as the LCC was way into the 300k+ because everytime the disk spun down QNAP Linux would restart it.

How will this work with the new QNAPS like the 239? Is this really compatible? My system will be on 24/7 but not accessed much, especially during off nightime hours.

I would suggest that these are a waste of money at the moment. They are the new SATA3 interface which is backwards compatible with SATA2.

Since the all the boxes listed above can only take SATA2, you can never get the full performance of the disks and are therefore wasting money on extras you cannot use.

I suggest that most disk manufacturers are pretty similar speed wise when used in most QNAP nas boxes - especially the small ones, and i would just opt for price at the moment until QNAP release boxes designed to cope with the new sata 3 interface.

Actually, at least in my market it is the lowest priced 2 TB disk of all at the moment. I guess that is the main reason for their sudden popularity here in the forum now...

Regarding not getting the full performance of the disk: The sustained data transfer rate is specified at 144 MByte/s by Seagate. I don't see how a SATA 3 Gbit/s (375 MByte/s) interface could be a bottleneck, or what the benefit of a SATA 6 Gbit/s interface would be - other than marketing.

The disk is very new, announced on the 14th of december 2010, so there can't really be any sigificant experience with it yet. Anyone that wants it will simply have to take a chance and hope for the best. Or wait until some others have done that.

As far as I understand things it is a 4k-sector disk so make sure you upgrade the Qnap firmware to a version with that support BEFORE initializing the disk in the Qnap. Search the forum for 4k, the issue have been discussed and the upgrade procedure described several times.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

I just wanted to tell everyone, what we Successfully Setup RAID1 (mirror) on a TS-210 with 2x ST2000DL003 Drives.

So far so good. No error messages. And we used the latest version of Firmware.

I would really like some feedback on how well these behave with QNAP 'sleep mode' and their performance.

I have just setup a new TS-859 Pro+ with 8x 2 TB ST2000DL003
I only used them as I can not find any other HDD's around in Melb Aus, and they are a good price ATM. I'm hoping the go on the compatibility list :-)

So far so good migrating off data from the old TS-409 with replication.

After a lot of faffing around with 3 x Samsung HD204UI I've opted to try the Seagate drive.
These are available in the UK for around £70 at the moment (less last week from Overclockers), so not too expensive.
Anyway, mine should arrive tommorrow so I'll post my findings ina day or so.
Cheers.
