Hi QNAPAlex,

the dropout is during system operation. Here is a snippet from the system log:
2011-08-07 13:00:31 System 127.0.0.1 localhost [Remote Replication] DATA Backup stopped.
2011-08-07 12:59:15 System 127.0.0.1 localhost Drive 1 plugged out.
2011-08-05 00:00:02 System 127.0.0.1 localhost [Remote Replication] DATA Backup started.

I had another dropout when I started using the NAS, which occured when I was on the way to configure the hard disks as single volumes (which is sadly not in the logs anymore) ...

Thanks

I'm experiencing the same problems, drop out on load. (using a TS-412) with 4 ST2000DL003-9VT1CC32 in Raid5
Over here the dropouts occur when i stream a movie and at the same time downloading (unrar/par) from newsgroups from a external computer.

The only load the qnap has at that moment is some network load and a little disk load.

At happend twice since updating to firmware 3.4.4.

Can someone help me out, I have a Qnap 859 Pro and I am looking to upgrade to these Seagate ST2000DL003 hard drives. With the problems some people are haveing with these Seagate ST2000DL003 drives, is it safe to use these drives on a Qnap 859? Will these drives drop out? Will I encounter disk read, write delay errors?

If these drives are not recommended, are there better hard drives someone can advise? These 2TB drives are one of the cheaper ones I can find.

Thank you.

I've only just seen this thread after taking delivery of two of these drives today (to add to my TS-419p+ which has 2 Samsung HD024UI drives already).
I bought the drives because they're on the compatibility list for consumer use.

I'm already on firmware 3.5 - so I'm hoping it's a non-issue now.
I'm in the middle of the RAID 1 initialisation and will report back at a later date to share my experience of the drives.

Today installed the 3.5.0 update on my ts-412 and after an hour got a disk drop (read/write error on disk one) the times this happened before was on disk 2
Had a very low load on the nas when this happend download speed of 1.1Mbp/s and a read of maybe 3 Mbp/s while using my mediaplayer.

@ nielsgreef

We are tracking the issue now.
- Seagate ST2000DL003 HDD dropout during the operation mode.

@ MiloW

I will advise you to update the TS-419P+ to 3.4.4 build0719 at the first. The special build day firmware can help to update the uboot to improve the HDD compatibility with Samsung HD204UI. http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=160&t=47468

EDIT: change to 3.4.4 build0719

I have 4 drives into my Qnap TS-439 Pro II+ Intel atom based. They are working for about two months and still no issues. They are working perfectly.

Well this is a worry,
This has been a known issue for how many months and no fix?!

I have a TS-410 at home running 3.5.0 0816T
Have had it for close to 12 months to start with I had 2x 1TB Seagate ST31000528AS CC37
6 Weeks ago I added 2x 2TB Seagate ST2000DL0003 CC32
All now in a RAID 5 array.
All worked fine moderate low loading. Just used for media sharing and TimeMachine back ups.
Two days ago Drive 3 showed the same signs that are being reported.
Now on every boot I get Drive 3 passing all tests but a 'Disk Read / Write Error'
What is the progress on this? Because at the moment my array is in degraded mode and is read only.
I will be replacing our 5 QNap stations at work this month and no longer specifying them for projects.
I fully understand that problems can happen. But a company that does not support their gear and pour recourses into an issue that seems to be growing is a cause for concern for me.
Regards,
One disappointed previous QNap advocate.

May I ask why you are migrating away from the Synology? Bad experiences?

Having fought with this issue of "read/write error" for weeks I finally decided to move away from this badly engineered product which I just discovered uses a proeritary ext3 (that will not even mount on a standard linux should the nas itself fail.. ref. http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?t=3009) I actually start to think much of the bad engineering is not because they could not do better, but because they did not want customers to fix their own problems and build better solutions of the low-price products to compete with the high-priced ones.

Anyway.. what are your experiences with Synology and these drives?

Hi webdevnz,

Please backup your data and fill the online support form to contact with technical support for direct help. The degraded mode read only means one of the hard drive defected, and at the meanwhile the NAS get I/O error on its file system. If you are configured as RAID 5 and encounter the second hard drive failure, it will cause data loss. Sometimes, it can be caused by defected hard drive. You can examine the Seagate HDD healthy condition by HDD utility installed on Client PC.

Your issue is different than we discuss in this thread. We are trying to reproduce the HDD dropout issue during the operation for one week, but not succeeded.

@ All
We need the klog and system event log for further verification. If you have encountered the HDD dropout issue during the operation mode, please PM me with the two files compressed. Thanks

1. System event log.
- [System Administration] > [System Logs] > [System Event Log] > Save
2. kernel log (klogd)
- Please login the NAS via SSH (use Putty) and input following commands to get the Linux kernel message and PM to me.
#/etc/init.d/klogd.sh dump > /share/Public/klogd.txt

All models after the TS-X09-models (that reached end-of-sale a long time ago) use standard Linux ext3/ext4.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!
