Google Cloud Print connector

Postby kmonza » Mon Jan 31, 2011 2:25 am

Google just released Google Cloud Print which allows printing from anywhere to your home or office printer (http://goo.gl/y0P3X). Right now, this feature is only available through Chrome, but should evolve with time to something more standalone with Cloud Print-aware printers, and connectors. Currently, the pc and chrome must be on to be able to proxy the request to the printer.

Google relies on the developers' community to build these connectors, and my first thought was "Hey, that would be awesomely perfect for my NAS". I am not a developer, and would have no idea where to start, but I'm sure that this would make a lot of sense for a lot of people too, and so I thought I would just through this out there and propose a "QPKG Google Cloud Print connector".

let's talk about it ... :D

I'm perplex, 75 viewers in two days, but no one expresses interest. It seems that this would be a good feature to have on a NAS.

Write a quick reply if you also think so.

I guess you have a Cr-48 running Chrome OS, since that would be the only unit that can print on a Google Cloud printer, but I don't think many others have them yet. That may explain the limited excitement here...

I can by the way print on all my printers at home through my VPN when being away, yet I have never felt the urge to do so. Probably because I'm not at home to pick the prints up...

Also sniffed around my Android 2.1 phone for "Print" menus or links with attachments, supposed to work with the Google cloud print. No luck finding any i.e. Google Mail or Acrobat X. Without the Cloud Print support added to the Google supplied apps, the fun is limited:

Appears when opening for example the Web-based Googl eMail form the browser, the print options show up, and are able to find the Chrome-Beta published printers at home. Need to check netxt time on the road with other HTML5 browsers and when not VPN connected to the home office.

My point exactly, today that's the case, but Google is opening to developers who want to use the service. Using Chrome is very limited, not even to mention the fact that having a desktop computer on, with an open session just for that.. seems a little ridiculous.

If we could have a Google print connector on a NAS, allowing to print to the printers connected to it or on the same network, that is a much better value proposition.

Obvious.

The weak point in the intened print chain might be the print driver(s) - required in this case on the NAS then.

I have Ubuntu on one of my computers, and printing is surprisingly easy to configure. I don't see this as a major road block, even though it probably looks a lot simpler than it really is.

I agree with proposed suggestion... it would be nice to have a
qnap package for google cloud printing... in this case you could print ditectly a pdf from your android htc phone for example and your computer does not need to be on for this purpose...

Could this package be developed? I hope so....

Hi all,

this would be a very good solutions.

Not everybody has a VPN connection set up, especially when you are working at a companies computer - the capabilities to install software are limited. I would be very interested in a QNAP connection with Google Cloud Prints. Administration is always waiting at home, it would safe me allot of time.

Regards,

Roy
