Abnormal Reallocated_Sector_Ct Hitachi HDS723030ALA640 MKAO

Hi,

I have a QNAP TS-659 Pro II. 5 x 3TB Hitachi drives in it.

One of them has a red light and in the admin section displays:

Summary

Errors were detected on the hard disk. It is recommended to replace the hard disk.

I've ordered a couple more Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 3TB CoolSpin drives because the Hitachi HDS723030ALA640 MKAO's are all sold out or extremely expensive.

Questions.

1. Will the Coolspin work ok with the other 4 Hitachi HDS723030ALA640 MKAOs?
2. Is this error fixable? Anything I can do to resolve this error?
3. I've only had the drive for 3 months it should still be under warranty can I just email Hitachi to get it replaced under warranty?

Appreciate any and all advice.

Regards

Lee

There should be no problem getting the drive RMA'd (provided it's not a grey import!). The drive is toast and not repairable, in addition to the 5 reallocated sectors (bad sectors already mapped out) there are also 2003 pending events (noted sector errors which may also be reallocated if they're still bad next time they are used). Just go to the Hitachi website and enter your serial number to confirm the drive's warranty status. The site will tell you how to generate an error code to enter on the form. It's been a while since I RMA'd a Hitachi drive, the last few I've done were all WD. For WD returns If you give them valid credit card details they will ship a new drive out immediately pending return of the faulty drive, when the replacement arrives use the box it came in to return your old one.

Be thankfull it's not a Samsung drive as RMAs are a nightmare at the moment after Seagate took over responsibility for warranties on them.

Yes they should.
2. Is this error fixable?
No.
Anything I can do to resolve this error?
Replace the disk.

Usually the reseller handles warranty claims for end users so you should contact them and find out about at their RMA-procedures and requirements. Many (if not all?) resellers require the disk to be tested with the manufacturers diagnostic software (the long or extensive test).
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

This is true, but to go this route means you have to part with your own drive first then await the replacement (if done via post anyway). If you download the manufacturers test utility and generate your own error code you know a) there is no issue about whether it'll be accepted as faulty, and b) you can get the replacement before having to part with the original. I guess not so important with the NAS which will have to rebuild an array anyway, but for non-RAID desktop drives it allows you to transfer your data, then WIPE the disk before returning it...

Maybe I was unclear but that was my recommendation also.

If returning the disk directly to the manufacturer is an option (it may not be accepted from all markets) that's another possibility. At least in my country the reseller will cover also the shipping, which I don't think would be the case if returning directly to the manufacturer by (maybe) the more expensive international shipping.

Thankyou all! Great responses. I will get on with a warranty claim through PC Case Gear here in Australia first. If they accept the disk with this thread as proof then great. Otherwise I will go forward with the more direct route to Hitachi. Thanks for the great advice!

Hi to everybody,

I have a strange situation with my had wd Red.
The situation is the one of the picture (I hope you will see it).

Warning but Status equal to Good
Reallocated sector at 6
Reallocated event count at 3

No bad blocks during the test.

Should I be worried?

Thanks in advance
Giacomo

Off topic, and nothing strange...

Pease have an eye on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T. for the two attributes.

Monitor if things are changing over time.

The bad block check does check all blocks on the HDD. But then, the importance is more on blocks not in use, because of the SATA and SAS HDD are dealing with blocks showing issues during read or write.

Once a HDD dos start to use spare blocks from the limited reallocation pool, it's commonly agreed indication for a HDD start to develop issues.
