TS-219P II keeps rebooting when UPS is attached

Postby halo26us » Thu May 03, 2012 4:26 am

My QNAP T219P II works fine when it's not plugged into any UPS.
When I plug in the USB from a UPS, the QNAP sees the UPS and everything looks normal, but after a few minutes, it shuts down then restarts.

The only entries in the logs are:
- System was not shut down properly last time.
- System started
(over and over again)

Initially I tested with my APC 750E and did the same, so I thought it was an incompatible UPS.
I checked the compatibility list that I received from QNAP and bought a compatible, Cyberpower CP600LCD
But I'm still having the same issue!
Might as well throw this thing in a garbage can, if I can't get any UPS to work with it....

Please help!

(edit: I'm also on the latest fw as of today (5/2/12))

Have you tried different cables and different USB-ports on the NAS?

If a UPS listed as supported causes reboots I would contact support for assistance.

No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

FYI :

I am having the exact same issue with the TS-219P II and a APC Back-UPS Po 550.

I realise this UPS is NOT on the compatable list but I have run this model on a TS-219P and a TS-219P+ (albiet with older firmware) and they have run fantastically.

It is interesting to note that I have the UPS functionality turned OFF on the TS-219PII and the problem still occurs. It doesnt appear to be the system shuting itself down, but more like a power failure or OS restart.

I havent tried the other ups port or another cable as yet but will, and advise. Im thinking that it wont be much different. Interesting that halo26us has tried a listed UPS with the same problem. :?

Interested in knowing if anyone else has had this issue. :!:

Adam

Well still no go.

This UPS is not on the compatable list BUT I have used it with a TS-219P with firmware 3.3.1 Build 0720T and it works flawlessly. Hence my thinking that using it with the 219 P II would be no problem. I tested the actual UPS and cable on the 219P and no problems at all.

I know it isnt on the list but maybe the above info can help QNAP techs think about it.

Regards,
Adam

Im still interested to know if anyone else is having UPS problems with this model. It looks like halo26us had the same problems even with a compatable UPS.

Have you connected the USB cable to your PC and run the APC software to see what it says about the UPS/Battery?

I have the same issue and i'm using a listed UPS. Tech support just acknowledged the problem and advised that they are working on a firmware solution and to use the FRONT USB port of the TS-219 in the mean time. So I just re-plugged my UPS into the front port. We will see how well that works. It usually takes less than an hour for the NAS to act up.

I have exactly the same problem with an APC Back-UPS ES 550 and a TS-119P II, and it keeps rebooting also if i plug the ups in the front usb port.

The same issue here :-(
I have Cyberpower BS650E.
Looks front USB is fine. Maybe it is related to USB3 (rear) compatibility?

After few days I can confirm front USB works fine but please others.

I hav eexactly the same problem. My new TS-119PII is connected to a CyberPower Value 600ELCD through the USB cable. If the UPS is connected on the rear USB 3.0 port, my QNAP reboots every time and the logs say:
- System was not shut down properly last time.
- System started

When connected to the front USB 2.0 port, everything works fine.
I guess it's a USB3.0 compatibility (firmware?) bug. I do not know whether it is due to the same problem but my external drive enclosed in a ICY-BOX IB-318StU3-B box is not always recognized by the QNAP if turned on/off when the server is already on (I should restart the server for getting the drive recognized).

Ops...my firmware is the 3.7.1.

Hi,
I've seen exactly the same problem!
I'm now at the stage of questioning my sanity and whether it's worth bothering with the supposed advantages of a QNAP NAS.

I installed a 219P II initially with APC CS650 UPS (to be fair, not on the compatibility list -oops didn't check) and suffered random restarts.
The supplier suggested trying the NAS without the UPS, which seemed to prove the problem, and also decently sent a PSU brick to see if that helped (it didn't)
Feeling confident, I replaced the UPS with APC ES550 which is on the compatibility list and seemed ok.
The box then started the random reboots even with no UPS and was returned to the supplier - less drives.
I had to buy another 219P quickly for my customer (thank you ebuyer) as the warranty turnaround was 3 weeks - hopeless for a business.
Apparently the motherboard was replaced as they couldn't repeat the error...
In the meantime, the second 219P dropped a RAID drive last week. I tested the drive all weekend with seatools
(it's a seagate ST2000DM001-9YN1CC4C) and found no errors.
I refitted the drive today, restarted and the random reboots are back plus the replaced drive starts resync then reboots. Aaagghhhhhh.
I'm now wondering;
Is there a power supply problem - possibly it's not able to supply enough power to the drives?
Is there a hard disk compatibility problem - the drive fw is updated to CC4H
Is there a fw problem (still on 3.6.1 0302T)?
I will also try unpolugging the UPS USB cable

I was really pleased to discover NAS and love the management tools, but almost wish I'd suggested a standard windows 2003 server. At least it will run on any box and I can fix it and understand it.

Greencat, I have the same NAS TS-219P II with Seagate 3TB disks, and when I plugged the USB cable to my APC Back-UPS XS 650CI I started to suffer the random restart.

The solution is to update the FW to 3.7.1 and then plug the USB cable to the front USB (2.0). I guess that QNAP doesn't detect this failure.

me too...

I just posted to another thread (viewtopic.php?f=182&t=56670&p=281047&hilit=ups#p281047), but I figured I'd add my abuse to the chorus.

This REALLY needs to be resolved. A business class NAS (which QNAP is trying to produce) should just work. Not having full UPS support is pretty disappointing and is offered in much lower end products.

I'll try on the front USB jack...

*EDIT* Seems to be working ok on the front jack... for now... but this REALLY needs to be fixed such that the rear jacks work. It defeats that purpose of having front and rear jacks if the front jack is always in use for the UPS.

I don't see any mention of it in the release notes. I've just been asked to get a NAS and UPS for someone and I was thinking of ordering a 219PII and an APC Smart-UPS 750VA (the one that puts out something more like a sine wave; I've been using that model with a TS-659 for a couple of years and it works very well) but I guess I'd better hold off until we hear if this can be sorted out. The person concerned would not want a USB cable attached to the front port; I know for sure that I'd just get loads of 'verbal grief' if I set it up that way!

Hi Folks

Does anyone know if this has been fixed in the current firmware, or if not, has anyone been told if a fix has yet been found (and thus we can probably assume that the next firmware release will fix things)?
