Excellent news - about time WD break the no-RAID-support-for-desktop-drives dead-end. Had no chance yet to get my hands or a NAS on a bunch for in-depth testing, pitty. Let's see how the WD RED will be priced - I'll consider to order a bunch for updating some test NAS here.

I hope WD will add some NAS-based disk tools available, ie. for in-depth testing.

Too little. Too late.

WDC has already demonstrated contempt for their customers. Especially in regards to their Caviar "Blue"/"Black"/"Green" drives.
Western Digital Corporation will never see another penny from me. Ever! (The contempt is now mutual).

'Nuff said...

Newegg in the US is selling the 3tb model for $179.

Any word if QNAP has performed any testing? I know WD has but I'd like to see a statement from QNAP to say they are safe to use.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Yeah, looks like MSRP is roughly $10 more for the RED vs GREEN, but NewEgg has frequent incentives on the Greens.

QNAP is a launch partner for these drives. I think its safe to say they are QNAP approved...

WD Red NAS Hard Drive Launch Partners

QNAP Systems, Inc.

This is indeed welcome news - improving choice and hopefully serving to moderate prices through increased competition. WD's Hitachi stablemates apart it's interesting to note how well the million hours MTBF compares with the RE4's 1.2 million - at considerably less cost only tempered by the 3yr warranty. I also note the apparent demise of their RE4-GP as, perhaps not insignificantly, the 'alternative' link to it from their RE4 page now takes you to their Red page - "The King is dead, long live the King" succession ?

So QNAP what about support for the TS219?

I have a pair of WD10EADS that stop responding on a regular basis. Yes I know that they are not recommended, but only after doing some research after encountering problems.

I might consider the new RED drives if WD offer a refund for the crap WD10EADS they sold me.

They are classed under 'Desktop Drives'.

Looking to upgraded my NAS to a SATA III version with 3Tb drives so these could be an option. Saw the release details here: http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/wd-r ... #continued

But obviously someone beat me to starting this thread.

They are not available here yet but indicated prices are 209Swiss Francs (roughly 1:1 to the dollar). WIll be in the US next month so may have to bring a set back with me.

Apparently WD20EFRX is cheaper than WD2003FYYS (~100$ less in Switzerland)

Might be interesting...

Where are these orerable in Switzerland? My sources don't have them available yet

The key for the HDD prcing are (beyond size and capacity):
a) RPM
b) Warranty terms
c) MTBF
