QNAP TS-412 + 3 x 2Tb WD Green Drives in RAID 5!!!

Postby zxlife » Wed Jul 11, 2012 10:38 pm

Hi All,

Last week I have purchased a QNAP TS-412 along with 3 x 2Tb WD Green Drives and set them up as RAID 5.

Just now I have read the compatibility warning here viewtopic.php?f=182&t=33196 about using these drives and am now concerned about what my options are.
Effectively the disk drives are not fit for the purpose I purchased them for based on this warning.

I bought the QNAP and WD disks from Amazon as a single order but the choice of disks were the ones I chose at the time. I never thought to try to locate a compatibility list, no knew one existed.
Should I be able to return the WD drives and order some alternatives?
Any idea what my RMA rights are?

Thanks in advance for any ideas, suggestions you may have as to what I should do.
Chris

Challenge Amazon to replace the WD Green by NAS-compliant WD Red.

Pitty, vendors like these are commonly delivering what is ordered, they dodn't care about customer (presales) support or compatibility of the ordered goods at all.

Thanks schumaku,

I did just that. Phoned them and they have agreed to collect them and provide a refund free of charge based on the products being not usable with the NAS.
I think what went in my favour is that I bought the QNAP and drives in the same order and they only arrived 4 days ago.

Anyway, the WD Caviar RED drives are not in the UK yet. I will wait patiently using older disks for the time being and order some when they arrive.

Thanks for the suggestion schumaku, you've done me a big favour ;-)

I'm not known to defend Amazon but if products are ordered as separate items I definately don't think it is the responsibility of a reseller to confirm all items are compatible. Especially not when the reseller have a very clear low margin, high volume-profile as this one does. I often order things aimed for different projects in the same order and I expect others do the same from time to time, so for Amazon there would probably be a lot of orders that would be delayed if they did a compatibility check on all orders.

When the bookstore (or any other reseller) bundles disks with the Qnap, it's absolutely their responsibility to confirm compatibility but unfortunately they have occasionally failed that as well.

It's great that they agreed to do a refund. :D
No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

Thanks for your frank feedback P3R. You've got me worried that I've taken advantage of Amazon. I hope I haven't. I believe that any reseller does have a responsibility above and beyond just shifting boxes. Although accessing Amazon's T&C was fairly easily, they are pretty vague when it comes to a situation like this. I called them directly (which gladly they do provide a means to do so) and spoke with someone about the situation. I was very clear about my situation and the status of the purchase and they were happy to accept an exchange which I am very happy to do so.
PS: I like your sig. - good wisdom!

There's never any harm in asking.

Sure, and they did respond in an excellent way by allowing you to return the items, despite the issue being caused by yourself.

It is possible to offer a pre-delivery compatibility check when offering only a limited selection of available models and if there is a knowledgeable individual checking every order manually. Like it can be a with a low volume reseller business, but pricing will most likely be higher.

Amazon sells everything under the sun and being probably the largest reseller on the planet in many product categories(?), their volumes must be huge and the workflow highly automated. To expect a crosscheck of compatibility of all items in every order is in my opinion unrealistic with that product offering and the volumes they have.

You should choose the reseller with the profile you prefer between the above two extremes and in most cases you get what you pay for.

Well, I've ordered 3 2TB WD Red Drives from Amazon. Just waiting for them to come into stock:

Others may wish to consider buying from expansys - they claim to have 100+ in stock:

Never ordered from expansys before but the price from the UK site, plus (claimed 3-4 FedEx) shipping to the US is about $60 cheaper than I can find for any Red drives in the US already.... Almost seems too good to be true.

Been running 2TB WD greens in raid 5 for two years now. No problems. There is also a Seagate black 7200 and Samsung Spinpoint greens in the raid and as global spare.

Yes, I know it is not best practise - but I have backup. Therefore I choose disks that are on sale.

Using a 859 pro plus.
