Emulex OCE11102-NX can't be installed on TS879 Pro

Postby bguernsey » Thu Jul 12, 2012 5:24 am

I just received our QNap TS-879 Pro along with a Emulex OCE11102-NX 10GBit card.

I attached the mounting bracket to the card and tried to install it in the QNap. The PCI Express socket on the QNap doesn't have enough pins for this card to plugin. It needs ~4 more pins.

I'm incredibly confused since I referenced the hardware compatibility list and the hardware manual before ordering this card. The wrapper for the card says "Manufactured by Emulex Corp." and shows the model as "OCE11102-NX". I checked Emulex's website and they only list one card for that model number.

I've searched the forums an haven't read of anyone having a similar issue. The compatibility web page says it simply needs the mounting bracket installed- which I did.

If you know what the problem is- please let me know. All I can think of is that maybe something changed on the card or on the QNap so it is no longer supported. The card shows that it is "REV: F", but I don't expect that the PCI Express port has changed.

Strange - I was tempted to state the TS-x79 come with a standard PCIe x8 with 2 x 49 pins (if I'm not wrong, grey cells are becoming old) - just like the Intel X520 cards or the Emulex OCE11102-NX. The x4 (approx. - 17 mm) resp the x16 PCIe (approx. + 33 mm) connectors differ by much more then a few pins (spacing is 1 mm).

Check with QNAP support - I'm lost here. Let's home some hardware cracks cocme long this thread soon.

The OCE11102-NX that I was shipped (from amazon.com) has 52 pins.

I got to the bottom of this issue after a lot of detective work and no help from QNap or Emulex, though it was requested from both.

The card I have is an Emulex OCe11102-NX that is used on IBM Blade servers. It has a PCI Express 8x "extended edge" connector, which is one of IBM's own design. That connector has at least 4 more pins than a standard PCI Express 8x card. The card was being sold by Amazon and not labeled as an IBM Blade server card in any way. I wrote a review of the card on there to warn others. There were no markings on the packaging indicating that it was anything other than the Emulex PCe11102-NX.

I just find it hard to believe that Emulex wasn't familiar with this possibility. I returned the card and ordered an Intel X520-DA2 instead. It cost more, but I won't have to worry about getting a card with a non-standard PCI Express port.

Just an update- Emulex eventually did get back to me...about a week or so after sending them photos of the card. They confirmed what I already knew, and that is that the card was the IBM blade server version of the card. They offered to exchange the card directly for me, but I had already returned it to Amazon. I might have taken them up on the offer had it been more timely, but I couldn't wait weeks.
