TS-859Pro+ / Seagate 2Tb ST2000DM001 / Firmware 3.7.2

Postby mrfunkyjunkie » Sat Jul 28, 2012 5:49 pm

Im a relative newbie to qnap's but seasoned veteran with general use of this stuff in the field.

I have a TS859Pro+ at home, and since I got it last month - its been great - no complaints, love the modular installation of app's using qpkg (just wish there was more of them).

Today I accepted the prompt in liveupdate (having all my data backed up - etc etc) and the update was successful.
" System updated successfully from 3.7.1 to 3.7.2. " <- from system log.

Following the update Ive noticed an increased amount of noise from the unit - which sounds to me like the head parking and a drive spinning down - which didnt seem to occur pre-update. The particular drives im using, are Seagate 2tb / ST2000DM001 / Firmware CC4H - which are supported drive types.

Im currently running a full scan over all the disks in the unit to validate their health - but am curious whether anyone else has noticed anything similar with the latest update?

Assuming it's HDD spin-down - do you think thre are services which should prohibit a successful HDD spin-down?

If you have started your NAS experience on QNAP v3.7.1 firmware, and had not deployed the QFIX on your NAS - HDD spsindown was inded broken on the Intel v3.7.1 builds. That might explain, why you had not experienced this sound before.

Thanks for the feedback, I had not patched my NAS (i assumed liveupdate kept it as upto date as it needed to be)

guess I can continue to use this thing safe in the fact, its behaving in this way by design.

The QPKG patches are intended to addres things as fat as possible where the issues are showing up, or need to be addressed within reasonable time. Patches (QFIX) ae not rolled-out by the Live Update system.

Interestingly I hace seen one more port reporting more "noisy" operations since the 3.7.2 update with the same HDD model.

I'm assuming the first firmware version you were typically running on was 3.7.1? If so it's likely the first time HDD Spindown has actually worked (as schumaku was referencing).

In the off-chance you had the device running on 3.7.0 (or prior firmware version), did you notice any sounds from those versions?
Some drives do indeed make a bit of noise when the heads park and spindown is initiated.

If you disable drive spindown, does the sound still occur?

I can confirm this happens with 3.7.3 as well. I was hoping it would be a typo in the code or something where someone put seconds instead of minutes/hours. TS-859Pro+ 4x Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166. Reverting back to 3.7.1... :?

Edit: Updated HDDs from CC4B to CC4H firmware and the chirping stopped with the newer Qnap updates.

Plenty of reports in the net - Google for "chirp seagate" for example.

All these modern disks have controllers handling a lot of funtionality locally - beeing dynamic RPM change, head parking, ... plenty of reports on cirping and similar noise. We know that it's possible to diesble some of the autonomous functionality on the HDD controller. Not a difficult to guess: QNAP had disabled some or all controllable "green" functions disabled, before all operaitonal reliability issues were resolved on all NAD models.

I don't think these noises from the disks can be caused by the NAS at all. We have seen similar reports on certain activities beeing noticeble by audible diffeences from a plain "normal" HDD. We know it's possible to disable some of the green functionalities on the modern HDD by using hdparam,
