Hi Jason,

I do not have the LCC issue on my system personally. I just opened this thread here because several users over there in the German QNAP forum reported this issue with the new WD40EFRX HDDs.
I already purchased 8 of those WD40EFRX drives and wanted to install them in my TS-869 Pro. But I did not do it due to the LCC issue that emerged right after I purchased the HDDs...

What I did now is to read out the idle timer value from one of my 3TB WD30EFRX Reds with WDIDLE3. I found out that the idle timer is disabled in those 3TB drives. Afterwards I prepared my 8 WD40EFRX Reds with WDIDLE3 and also disabled the idle timer there.
In the next few days I'll install the WD40EFRX Reds in my TS-869 Pro and I assume that they will work perfectly without the LCC issue.

Damn! Oh well, looks like I'm getting the 4TB Seagate VN000 NAS drives for my TS-470

I actually plan on upgrading the units CPU to i7 2.5GHz and the RAM from 2GB to 16GB..

Christian, can you provide updates on how the drives perform in your NASH after using WDIDLE3. I have no idea or experience in what you are trying to accomplish, but if this leads t the drives being perfectly USABLE in the NAS without LCC errors, perhaps they too can work in the 470 without issues?

Any help is appreciated...

Hi roosta, hi all,

over there in the German QNAP forum a user finally got a very interesting answer from the WD headquarters!

Users that are familiar with the German language click here! Others please use Google Translator ;)

I think that this are good news. Kind of...

For the benefit of those reading on tablets where Google Translate is not friendly to large blocks of text:
Hello

Did get a response from WD support today, took a little longer because they have forwarded the request to the headquarter:

The LCC is only an "indicative value" and no value indicating damage to the drive. In addition, the drive easily coped a very high value.
In the event that I feel the high LCC as "annoying" yet WDIDLE3 was also sent as an attachment to set the timer to turn off.

Since half a day got the hard drives now with disabled timer running, no problems so far and the LCC is not risen. Since I got the tool from the Support I'm assuming that there will be no problems.

Regards
Florian

Okay here is the reply from WD:

Code: Select all

Dear Mr. xxxxxxx,

Thank you for your reply.

We apologize for the delay in your case but this has happened as we have escalated this for further investigation

We have discussed with in our teams and there should be no issues on the drives.
Please be aware that the load cycle smart value is an indication value and not an indication that the drive will provide an issues.
These drives can handle a high value on load cycles.

If you still want to change this we can offer you the idle tool to prevent the loading but please be aware that we do not support this.
This tool can be used on a single SATA port.

If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.

Sincerely,
xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I read out the timer value from one of my WD30EFRX Reds and there it's completely disabled.
Afterwards I set the timer to the same value (disabled) in all my WD40EFRX Reds => wdidle3 /d

As far as I know, latest version of WDIDLE3 is 1.05.

Hi johnripper,

although WDIDLE3 v1.05 worked fine for me, it would be nice to have the latest version :)

My just retired WD20EARS had LCC of 3104887 after three years. No biggie. Still working fine.

Hi All,
thanks for the WDIDLE 3 latest version!

So we have to set /D to disable completely OR /S300 to set to 5 munutes?

I don't understand IF Western Digital says that WE CAN use the WDIDLE on the new RED disks ??!!

(On the Caviar GREEN is not suggested to use the /D, disable completely, because possible error, my doubt is what command use!)

Another point are the SMART value on the NEW DISK:
MY SMART value are:
_____________________Actual___Worst___(Thresold__RAW)
01-Raw_read_error_rate__100_____253______ (51_____0)
03-Spin_up_time________100_____ 253______(21)
07-Seek_error_rate______100_____ 253______( 0_____0)

Other people with working disk without high LCC, instead of "100" as actual value, have "253"!!!!!!

What can you tell me about?
