Sorry got this wrong on the first part.
Anyway I dont understand why is relevant?
Hi

I was just pointing out that for one NAS model the Qnap compatibility list does show that disk as being tested (so at odds with what WD claimed in their response) whereas with the other NAS model the entire 3.5" disk list is missing. I was just highlighting these two discrepancies such that Qnap (and Qnap owners) can be made aware if them (and hopefully someone at Qnap can address them).

The official list shows the WD40EFRX as tested (without any special notes).

Thanks for these instructions! Nice to know what to do when I have to install my WD40EFRX Reds :)

That's why I have still left a slight hope that tweaking the drives with wdidle3 is not mandatory... :S

Did anyone else check if this also works for the WD40EFRX on a QNAP?

Load cycle count showing as 1073 in 51 hours on power on time here.
My old 3TB RED drive was about 50 in 9 months of use.
Looks off to me. Hope this can be address through a firmware update from QNAP.

It surely can not.
As far as I got this from older posts here in this forum and also in other forums where this issue is discussed, the only way to fix this is a firmware update that is provided by WD for those drives.

As an alternative, you could use wdidle3 to tweak some settings in the WD40EFRX Reds as decribed by tombulum here.

Yes I can confirm that this happens on the Netgear Readynas units as well.
I have also read posts on the Synology forums about it.
So essentially these drives, marketed for NAS use, do not work properly in three of the major NAS manufacturers' units.

Time for a product recall or an urgent firmware fix WD.

WD still refused to provide any customer service on this. They just closed this ticket without further notice.

Hello TheRooster2000,
Can you tell us your WD Red 4TB HDD firmware version and part number?
Does it happen on all of your Red 4TB? how many?
I'll ask our lab to use our Red 4TB on hand and run it for a week to monitor the LCC issue.

Jason,

It's noting QNAP specific, same issue in a PC, in ReadyNAS, ... already when idling there about 50..100 LCC while connected to a Windows PC

WD40EFRX, NASware 2.0, 68AX9N0, FW 80.00A80 ... different manufacturing dates in September.

As WDC does not want to hear to customers QNAP wold do good to use their contacts. As of now, we can not promote using the WD40EFRX at all.
