Oh my god,

took me 3 hours to get that freaking usb stick to boot freedos. Also had to rip apart all my drive in desktop. My drive was set to 8 sec, in the end i decided to go with idle timer 300 sec.

Thx wd for nothing, what a crap :x

My just retired WD20EARS had LCC of 3104887 after three years. No biggie. Still working fine.

Hi All,
thanks for the WDIDLE 3 latest version!

So we have to set /D to disable completely OR /S300 to set to 5 munutes?

I don't understand IF Western Digital says that WE CAN use the WDIDLE on the new RED disks ??!!

(On the Caviar GREEN is not suggested to use the /D, disable completely, because possible error, my doubt is what command use!)

Another point are the SMART value on the NEW DISK:
MY SMART value are:
_____________________Actual___Worst___(Thresold__RAW)
01-Raw_read_error_rate__100_____253______ (51_____0)
03-Spin_up_time________100_____ 253______(21)
07-Seek_error_rate______100_____ 253______( 0_____0)

Other people with working disk without high LCC, instead of "100" as actual value, have "253"!!!!!!

What can you tell me about?

TheRooster2000 wrote: What I did now is to read out the idle timer value from one of my 3TB WD30EFRX Reds with WDIDLE3. I found out that the idle timer is disabled in those 3TB drives. Afterwards I prepared my 8 WD40EFRX Reds with WDIDLE3 and also disabled the idle timer there.
In the next few days I'll install the WD40EFRX Reds in my TS-869 Pro and I assume that they will work perfectly without the LCC issue.

Christian
must confirm LCC issue with 2 WD40EFRX's / Sept 2013, THD
- WD really ...

confirm as well - factory settings
WD30EFRX's idle disabled
WD40EFRX's idle 8secs

So I disabled idle time on my WD40EFRX's with wdidle3.

@Christian, thank you!

Cheers, boxida

As said, I disabled idle time
but :o ....... disk 2 is still counting... in hour cylces.
and yes, wdidle3 1.05 and latest version used.
annoying! WD......

however,
HDD's are quiet, cool and accessible, Neither s/r/w errors nor recalibration counts. :|

Hi gents and lads,

Synology user here with 5x 4TB WD RED WD40EFRX drives.
Came across this post during my research.

Found this post very useful and just wanted to share with you my FreeDOS ISO containing latest WDIDLE3 2.0.0.1 only.
Package also contains unetbootin for Win and Mac - ver 5.85.

Hi All,

I set myself to change my wdidle3 timer this morning. Took my drive off the NAS, plugged them into my PC and booted LiveDOS with wdidle3.. And found out all of my 5 x 4TB WD REDs (all of them the same model WD40EFRX-68WT0N0, same fw 80.00A80) have the timer disabled already.. First tried with WDIDLE3 2.0.0. Later on tried with WDIDLE3 1.05. Results exactly the same.. 'Idle3 Timer is disabled'..

Got me thinking and decided to verify this on my NAS itself (DS1513+) as it actually comes with WD idle3 tool built in already ;) [for other Synology users popping in by this thread: script /usr/syno/etc/rc.d/S99WDidle3Dis.sh]
And it confirmed the timer is disabled.. Please see screenshots attached...

Based on the fact my drives have the timer disabled already but some users here have had their 4TB WD REDs with this timer set to 8 seconds - would this mean WD has actually disabled this perhaps on newer models.. Very interesting indeed..

@dombera,
is really very very very strange!!!
I have the WD40EFRX-68WT0N0 firmware 80.00A80 production date 14 september 2013 and I have LCC problem!!!!!

Could you please tell us the production date of your disks??
and please, also the SMART ACTUAL and WORST value for: 01-Raw_read_error_rate,
03-Spin_up_time, 07-Seek_error_rate.

thanks!

@fabiocasi

All 5 of my drives have the same production date: 9 September 2013.
Looks like your drives are few days younger ;)

In regards to SMART data please have a look at the screenshot below. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Mine is NEWEST and hasn't timer disabled?!!!! HOW IS POSSIBLE ??? (Maybe production site??)

Other strange thing is the SMART "value" 100 instead of 253 of yours and other people.

Do you have experience in the smart value?? Do you thing is necessary to RMA the disk?

Hi all,

meanwhile I installed my 8 WD40EFRX in my TS-869 Pro. As I already described earlier in this thread I disabled the idle timer with wdidle3 -d prior to installation. This is the same setting as in my older WD30EFRX drives from last January.
Now the WD40EFRX drives are up and running for nearly 60 hours and I cannot see any issues with high LCC counts at all! :)

<Load_Cycle_Count> is at 7 after 60 hours, same value as for <Start_Stop_Count> and <Power_Cycle_Count>.

So no issues that I should be worried about! :D

I assume qnap's hdd standby function is turned off. Is it?
