**.

I see about 10 load-unload cycles/hour with the WD40EFRX drives in RAID 1 configuration on a small device TS-259 Pro+/QTS 4.0.2 when the device is idle.

Drives are
Type: WD40EFRX-68WT0N0
Firmware: 80.00A80
Build date: 27.08.2013 and 05.09.2013

I will open a ticket with WD support tomorrow.

Okay, cool. I appreciate that!

Maybe this is somehow related to issues that some users report here. QNAP seems to be aware of that and released a new beta 4.0.5 here. But unfortunately the beta did not seem to help [click!] :'

Logged a ticket with WD already.

No sure if this is related.
Also I'm running a TS-259 Pro+ what cant use the SMB fw.

I'll wait until WD reply and think about upgrading the other devices. Currently have a bunch of RED disk that cant be used.

Please keep us informed about WD's response to this!
I hope they soon will release a firmware upgrade for the WD40EFRX reds :S

Yepp I will. Guess it will be mid of next week for them to come back.

Did you try to replace one disk on your 869?

No, I didn't replace one yet. I'll keep all my six WD40EFRX Reds in their original wrapping for now. So I could potentially return them to the vendor if they can't be used in my QNAP :S

Hi johnripper,

did you already receive a reply from WD?

Just to keep you all informed:
Another user in the German forum has the same issue with his WD40EFRX Reds. His drives show about 50.000 LCCs within only 250 hours! Those drives are killing themselves in a NAS system with Linux OS...!! :shock:

I hope WD will release a fixed firmware for those drives ASAP. Otherwise the WD40EFRX Reds are unusable! Weird!

Sorry for late reply. I did publish some Information on the german QNAP Forum but they decided to play some funny games.

So here is the first reply from WD on this:

Code: Select all

Dear xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Support. We would like to apologise for the time it took for us to reply to your email.

If I understand you correctly, you are worried about growing Load_Cycle_Count of your WD Red drive.

Thank you for your feedback we are aware of this. Please note that WD40EFRX has not been tested with QNAP TS-259 Pro+ or QNAP TS-559 Pro II and is officially not on the compatibility list:
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810

I also would like to mention, that WD puts our products through extensive Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T) prior to any product launch. This testing ensures our products consistently meet the highest quality and reliability standards of the WD brand.

I hope this information resolves your issue if the issue is not resolved and you require further assistance, please reply.

Sincerely,

My reply to this requesting further information on this issue (that they are aware of as my understanding) there is NO reply.

Currently I don't have any free device I can test the devices with.

Sadly this is TRUE

I had over 500 Load_Cycle_Count cycles in the 12 hours after i finished loading it from the 3tb red via esata and installing. I have now reverted back to the 3tb drive which still shows zero (0) cycles and boxed the 4tb red drive to await a WD firmware update.

My fault i guess as it is not on the compatibility list at WD as stated above.

Hi

I've just looked and it would appear that the WD40EFRX (Red) is on the TS-559 Pro II compatibility list, so unless I'm missing something, the WD statement would appear to be incorrect (I've just looked at the TS-259 Pro + and it only has 2.5" drive options listed in the drop down selection menu).

Pretty much unlikely - as all NAS models share very similar firmware.
JohnnyBG wrote:TS-119 3.7.1 Build 20120615
Doubt it will change anything on the LCC (as it happens on "supported" NAS, too...) but I hope you are aware that at the time your firmware was built, there were no WD Red available at all.

Same here. I'll keep my fingers crossed, that WD will release a FW update for the WD40EFRX Reds at all to fix this issue! :S

As far as I know the LCC issue is not related to the firmware or NAS model at all. It even happens if those drives are connected to a standard PC. So it could only be solved by a revised HDD firmware...

@All:
Everybody with this issue PLEASE open a ticket with WD as WD refused to assist on this.

@Brian:
1/WD is referring to its own compatibly list not on the QNAP list.
2/Not sure about your source, but TS-259 Pro+ has 3.5'' drive options.

@schumaku:
Pretty sure this is a WD issue not a QNAP issue as this does not happen on WD30EFRX drives and other user report the issue this with other devise (Windows PC), too.

Currently about 200 LC/day.

Hi

In both cases, I was referring to the Qnap lists by navigating to http://www.qnap.com -> Archive -> NAS model. I'm not sure why the 259 Pro+ only has 2.5" disk options on the 'drop down' selection list, but that's how it currently looks to be (on my iPad).

As alluded to in other posts, I can't see why it would be so different between Qnap models as I'd have though that aspect of the Qnap firmwares will be broadly similar across models. My post was just highlighting that it is on the Qnap compatibility list for the TS-559 Pro II and that the TS-259 Pro+ compatibility list currently seems to only show 2.5" drives; most odd.
