Fan control error

Post by percyy »

Today suddenly I got:

2014-01-03 09:21:55 System 127.0.0.1 localhost Smart Fan Control: System fan2 failed.
2014-01-03 09:21:22 System 127.0.0.1 localhost Smart Fan Control: System fan2 resume.

from log on QNAP TS-809U.

Firmware is old. It is V3.4.3, build 052T.

I checked fan is working. Power is working. I have no idea why it reports error.
Do you have any suggestion?
Thank you.

If you are technically inclined, you might get away with simply removing, cleaning, and reinstalling the fans. (If your NAS is as old as it's Firmware it is no longer under warranty, you might want to consider removing/replacing the fan(s). Most QNAP models use 4-wire PWM (Pulse-width modulation) fans, so ensure you get the right type. Voltage/RPM/CFM specifications etc should be printed right on the Fan to help you find suitable replacements with the same specs or better.

Noctua has a reputation for reliable "quiet" Fans, so you might want to spend the extra money to get one of their quieter models. Noctua is an Austrian company, but their products are available worldwide.

Check out Wikipedia article: Fan control for information on Fans, PWM, CFM, RPM etc.

Replacement fans should be relatively cheap, and definitely less expensive that replacing the entire NAS. Proper cooling is important for any computing device, so I would recommend not simply ignoring those error messages. Sounds like the fan is on it's way to dying (based on error messages you provided), better to spend a little money now, rather than a lot of money later. I personally view Fan replacement as "preventive maintenance".

You may want to get a technician to install it for you, as the pinout order, may be different between QNAP and the OEM Fan manufacturer you choose, so it might require minor reordering of the wires in the plug, or even a completely different plug in order to be able to connect it properly to your NAS. (As you'll be throwing out the original fan anyway, you can probably re-use the connector with the new fan if you find it isn't "pin-compatible" with the QNAP provided one).

Hi Patrick,

I am currently looking at replacing my fans on my TS-809 Pro (I know we're talking about the 809 U in this topic, but I'm jumping on your reply and the benefit of fan replacement), even if they give no sign of issue.
The orginal reference is ADDA AD1212LB-A7BGL, which is a 120mm fan generating 72 CFM.

Going through tests, I found a good candidate (in term of noise generated vs CFM) with Scythe GlideStream, but it exist in "normal" or PWM control.

I have not been able to determine if the original fans of my TS 809 Pro are PWM or not (even going on ADA website).

So my question is pretty simple: are the original fans on my TS 809 Pro PWM or not?

Thank you a lot in advance.

Best regards,

Denis

I believe all QNAP models use PWM (Pulse-width modulation) Fans, but you should probably check with QNAP Support to confirm this.

Thanks for your super quick reply Patrick.

I'll double check with them and post a confirmation here in case they respond to me.

Hi Patrick,

I received the confirmation from QNAP support that these are PWM fans (with 4 wires).
I ordered two Scythe Glidestream 1900 PWM 120mm fans to replace the OEM ones (one is making a strange noise now: it will be the right time to replace them).

Thank you again for your quick response.
