WD RED Nasware 2.0 so loud when seeking?

Post by PeterKK »

Hello

I have here WD RED 3TB and 4TB, both are very load when seeking, also every 10 seconds they make a sound (probably heads movement). I have also 6 months old WD RED 3TB Nasware (not 2.0) and it is absolutely quiet when seeking, it also make sound every 10 seconds (it is Not heads parking, load/unload cycle is not increasing), but to hear that on old 3TB I must put ear right on HDD.

Is this normal, or this load seek noise will become quiet after some days/weeks?

many thanks

Have you tried asking WD since they make the drives?

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Nice, I found old datasheet from 2013, there was

Idle/Seek (dBA)
2013
2014

WD30EFRX
23/24
23/27

WD20EFRX
23/24
23/27

WD10EFRX
21/22
21/24

thanks WD, thanks...

This looks like turned off Automatic Acoustic Management, does anybody have software to turn it on? HD Tune detect that there is no AAM, but there is some AAM as the louder one has better access time (16 vs 21 ms).

Hi,

Did you guys get any answers on this yet?

I just installed a Qnap253Pro with 2 WD RED Pro's 2GB http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810 Nasware 3.0
It states:
3D Active Balance Plus
Our enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves the overall drive performance and reliability. Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system, reduce the hard drive life span, and degrade the performance over time.
So I was hoping they would be quiet. But not! They make a terrible noise!

Regards,

GC
