External Enclosures

Post by GunMetalBlue »

I have a TS-410 with firmware 3.7.1 Build 20120615 running four 750GB Seagate Barracuda 10 in raid 5. There’s only about 400GB of “critical” data that needs to be backed up on a daily basis. Numerous offsite backups of the data already exist, but I’m looking to upgrade the local backup (currently, a very old 200GB IDE to USB enclosure is used). I have a spare 750GB Seagate Barracuda 10 and just need an enclosure. USB/ESATA doesn’t really matter for I only generate 5-10MB per day on average, but dependability is paramount with price kept in mind. The Rosewill enclosures on the compatibility list have appealing features for the price.

My question is does anyone have any experience with the Rosewills or any other modern enclosures attached to QNAPs?

I use one of these instead:

A USB2.0/eSATA drive dock is under $30.00USD, and you can use it with multiple loose drives as needed.

Patrick,

Thanks for the reply. I got two of these units. I think they’re great, however I tried on them on the 410 a few months ago and after about a day it disconnected. Being a 7200 rpm drive and that it was hot to the touch, maybe it should be in an enclosure with a fan if it’s going to be in use 24/7? After the disconnect, I ran the drive in the docking station on a PC with Seagate Seatools (extended test) and passed.

As an afterthought, this isn’t the first time I’ve had issues with these aging desktop drives with the 410. Eventually, as fundage permits, I plan to replace all the drives (inside and outside all the same model) with NAS or ES drives that are on the compatibility list. I know they might not be the best anymore, but I’ve been a fan of Seagate since the MFM days.

Thanks again,

After thinking about my overheating theory, I took one of my docking stations and the drive and plugged into a PC. After sitting just powered on for several hours, according to the temperature from the SMART data, the drive was at 48C. Just out of curiosity, I then put the drive under heavy load, and after an hour, the temperature rose to 52C. It's probably safe to say that these 7200RPM/multi platter drives need active cooling. It would be interesting to do side by side comparison with a "green" drive.

I'm not sure about continuous operation, but leaving the docking station plugged into the QNAP, to be able to plug in loose drives for convenient offsite backup would be a great idea.

Thanks Patrick for sparking the idea,
