Can't delete files: permission needed: RESOLVED

Postby Jay OBrien » Wed Jul 04, 2012 11:25 am

I have a TS109 Pro II (QNAP1) and a TS119 (QNAP2). QNAP2 is a mirror of QNAP1 as a backup. I have two files on the QNAPs that I want to delete using Windows Explorer on a networked computer. These files are in an otherwise empty directory; I deleted the other files without a problem. On QNAP1, the error message is "You require permission from QNAP1\admin to make changes to this file." On QNAP2, the error message is "You require permission from QNAP2\guest to make changes to this file."

Hundreds of other files and folders don't have this problem; as far as I know these are the only files needing "permission" in the files that are accessible to me in Windows Explorer over my LAN.

It has been over two years since I set these up, and I have forgotten how they were set up. I have tried to find help in the manuals and I am completely lost.

All I want to do is delete these files, and learn what it is that I should have done.

Thanks, Jay O'Brien, Folsom, California, USA

Based on a suggestion in a similar thread, I again looked at the properties of a file I wanted to delete by right-clicking on the file in Windows Explorer. Under Security, I found that user "Everyone" and user "administrators (Unix Group\administrators)" were allowed to only "Read" the file. I found user "administrators (QNAP1\admin)" was allowed to "Read & Execute" in addition to being allowed to "Read" the file.

I edited the "Everyone" user to have "full control", as I did before posting this forum query, and again found I could not delete the file; again, it said "You require permission from QNAP1\admin to make changes to this file".

Next, on a whim, I edited the user "administrators (QNAP1\admin)" user to have "full control", and voila! I was able to delete the file. It appears to me that my computer, connecting via my LAN to the QNAP, is the QNAP1\admin user! Whew!!

Following this strategy, I was able to successfully delete both subject files in both my QNAP1 and QNAP2 external NAS devices. Then, I was able to delete the directory that holds only these two files, in both QNAP devices.

I wonder how these two files, and apparently only these two files, were created with only "Read & Execute" permissions rather than "full control" permissions? Interesting....

I hope my experience helps others with this problem. I appreciate this forum being available, I wouldn't have found an answer without it being here, even if the answer wasn't found in a response to my post.

That's anouther beast - wich aparently started back a long time ago. In a workgroup environment, users are strongly encouraged to set-up uer accounts with the same credentials for the Windows Login and on the NAS. Then grant the access rights to the shared folddes on the NAS accordingly.

No, most likley, this would have caused the same issue. Hard to say why the access richts have been changed - applications can do it, for example, too.
