Replacing Windows AD with Qnap?

Post by hertell »

Hi,

Is it possible to replace a windows ad with a qnap? What i'm looking for is to be able to manage simple user-authentication and file-shares.

I have a small office with 3 users, and here is running a windows 2008-server. I feel it a bit pointless to run a windows-server for such small amount of users.

Not for centralised Windows desktop authentication and login scripts as Windows desktops will only authenticate against a Windows Domain controller.

But yes for file share access you can manage access centrally from the NAS

QTS 4.1 does bring SAMBA 4 ADDC on NAS models with the SMB firmware and following a reinit from scratch.

Hi,

If i got it right, Samba 4 can act as an AD DC, and in this way replace a windows logon server?

This is great news :-) I will have a look at this and check how i could do a painless upgrade on my current NAS

You need for a SAMBA4 AD-Server a TS-x69 or TS-x70 NAS

No, you need a actual SMB-NAS listed in the previous post

I have a TS-469L and I just installed the QTS 4.1 build 504 to try the domain controller fuctionality. It seems that this function is installed only on factory defaulted NAS but also in this way I can not find the "Domain Controller" menu in Control Panel/Applications.
Do you know how can I bring up this functionality?

If I SSH on NAS I can check the Samba version with smb2status the version seems to be ok:

[~] # smb2status
smbd (samba daemon) Version 4.0.16
smbd (samba daemon) is running.
max protocol SMB 3.0 enabled.

Thanks,
Andrea

I have a TS-469L with 4.1 RC2, and I also noticed I don't have the option to set as a Domain Controller. I read your above post, what does "following a reinit from scratch" mean? Do we really have to wipe and reset everything to get the Domain controller option? It seems very odd to need to do that.

Thanks!

I'm also interested in this myself. I dont' see any information in the listed 4.1 manual. http://www.qnap.com/useng/index.php?lang=en-us&sn=9071

Bump. Anybody know why we need to "reinit" from scratch to get this feature?

Thanks

At first I had done an upgrade. But the NAS had many problems after that. Every second day I had to do a reboot and many other things. The AD works seldom more than one day.
Then I reinstalled with 4.1 (Beta from 21 December in March) and since that the NAS runs fine and makes every RC update. My AD works well now.

Are you saying you did a "reinit from scratch"? I still don't even see the option on my ts-469L 4.1 RC2.

To answer your question, yes you have to reinit your NAS. A upgrade doesn't work, has to be don from scratch.

Have a 469l and first tried an upgrade and it was listet in the overview but always said it wouldn't work, after a complete reinstall it worked. have 3 PCs getting software and group policies from it

TS-259Pro

smbd (samba daemon) is running.
max protocol SMB 2.1 enabled.
SAMBA4 and PDC - no?
