DNS Lookup not working.

Questions about using Windows AD service.

DNS Lookup not working.

Postby macman67 » Wed Jul 18, 2012 11:48 pm

I am trying to add my Turbo NAS to our corporate domain. DNS servers are configured correctly on the Network page but when I try to add the NAS to the domain, it fails with a message,

'Failed to join domain: failed to lookup DC info for domain 'domain.name' over rpc. The network name cannot be found'

When I ssh into the NAS, I can ping the DNS server (which is also the Domain Controller) with it's IP address but not with it's FQDN or hostname.

Any help gratefully received.

If 'domain.name' can't be resolved it's a misconfiguration of your NAS or your DNS servers - and not a NAS issue at all.

The NAS cocnfigured DNS must be able to lookup local dodmain names - these can not be the router LAN IP, the ISP's DNS server, any public DNS servers.

If ncclear - only cocnfigure DNS IP of the Active Driectory system, and it's replication partner.

domain.name must be resolveable - ping domain.name must work ...

I'd come to the same assumption. However, there's not much you can configure wrong on the NAS, at least not through the GUI and PCs on my domain have no problems with the DNS servers.

I'm stuck as to how to fault find and troubleshoot why the NAS isn't able to query the DNS. I've done a bit of Linux, hence being able to ping addresses from the command line but that's about it.

Any suggestions??
