URbackup client on QNAP?

Post by alexp71 »

Is it possible to install urbackup linux client on TS-469U ?

We use urbackup for workstation backup over LAN. Urbackup server is installed on old, but still serviceable Windows Server 2003 box. We use TS-469U for file shares.

I could use windows ntbackup on that server for shared folders on QNAP, but it would be much better if I could install urbackup linux client on QNAP.

Main problem is that QNAP is in production, so too much experimenting is out of question.

This is highly unlikely to ever be possible. This UrBackup package is a heavy-weight package, that "depends" on several libraries etc that are simply not available on the "embedded Linux" that is QTS 4.1.2 Build 20141229 (or prior).

I have seen tutorial how to install urbackup server, and yes, I agree - too complicated, too much missing dependencies. Not worth the risk of messing something up. I was hoping that client install would be simpler.

I will probably try something different... Maybe you can give me advice what path should I take. Let me explain what I got, and what I want :)

QNAP NAS TS-469U with 4 disks of 3TB in RAID5 - about 9GB of space (used about 2TB, for now) - It is used for company shared documentation, scanned documents, some user documents, etc. The most of the documents are already compressed.
Backup server running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise - with about 9 GB on stripped volume (planning to expand). They are connected through LAN
Active Directory - both boxes are members
Budget - as low as you can imagine (and then cut to the half :) )

My main concern is not hardware failure, but data corruption and accidental deletion. It happens a lot, usually it is noticed after a week, even months. I need backups I can "rewind" for at least 1 year, and do it fast. Backups are supposed to be on a weekly basis.

Simple mirroring is out of the question. Full weekly backup would take too much time and disk space on backup server. I would prefer backups pushed from NAS, if it is not possible I could always use some backup software installed on backup server.

Best regards.
Aleksandar
