Windows server backup across wan

Postby russgarrett » Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:25 pm

I called Qnap sales 2 or 3 times before purchasing a 259 pro+ and was told there was no problem backing up a Windows Server across a wan. The reason for purchasing the Qnap was to backup my clients WIndows 2003 and 2008 servers from my office and then i would backup the Qnap to Elephant or Amazon.
Each client's server would be backed up to a specific folder on the Qnap. in the event of a server crash i could copy their folder to an external usb drive and then go onsite with their data and copy it to their repaired server. this is a terrific advantage over Carbonite or Mozy.

After contacting Qnap tech support several times i was told this is not possible. it can be done on a lan which i have done using Netbak Replicator but not across a wan. you can only backup another Qnap Nas across a wan i was told.

is this true?

if it is possible to backup a Windows server across a wan how is it done with Netbak Replicator ?

Hi mate

Let me check so i have understand you right here. Your Qnap device is offsite from where your servers are located. You want to backup your server to this device and also have your Qnap backup offsite to the cloud like elepehant drive?

The way i would solve this problem would be. If possible move the Qnap device on-site. This will allow mutch faster transfer speeds and minimize the backup window that in most cases are limited. If that is not possible i would use an vpn connection to the main office where the Qnap device is. However having the device local is preferable.

I would create iscsi lun's and map them to each and every server. Then use windows server backup with the dedicated harddrive option for baremetal recovery, better version support etc. From your qnap create an iscsi backup jobb and select an local folder of your choice. You will be able to transfer the backed up lun image to eighter elephantdrive or another rsync capable device.

Check out the online manual for the different options you are not familure with like rsync, iscsi backup etc.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

sorry for my communication error.

i have a 259 pro + at my office. i wanted to put netbak replicator on remote servers across a wan and have it backup incrementals or differentials nightly. i wanted to do several servers. the only way may be with a vpn . however, i was told by Qnap before my purchase this was easy and the product was made to perform this function and many others.

i was only going to use elepant drive to backup my 259 in case a tornado comes through again. last year on April 27th over 250 people were killed in Alabama . i was lucky it barely skipped over my house.

if this was to be successful i was going to upgrade to a larger nas. i had told qnap this was only for testing purposes with a few clients. Qnap did suggest Open VPN.

i have Teamviewer which is like Webex and i can do a VPN with that software with it loaded on the server if possible. what Qnap made sound so simple just does not work very well.

I don't run Netback Replicator but according to the marketing and the documentation it looks as ftp and WebDAV are possible backup destinations. In theory that makes a connection over the internet possible also without a VPN. It may however not be possible due to other things in your respective networks and depending on security policy it may not be advicable either.

If you don't have the knowledge to evaluate the different connectivity solutions in your environment and implement the best one I think you need to hire someone to do that for you. In my opinion that is far beyond the responsibility of a product support department. The message you got from support maybe was a more polite (but far less clear) way to express what I just said?

I don't use Teamviewer but to my knowledge it is a remote control/desktop application, not a VPN-solution.
No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!
