Re: Turn off thumbnail generation in Filestation
I noticed that even though thumbnails are no longer generated, descending into a directory containing media files still results in a .@__thumb sub-directory being created.
Also, turning off thumbnail generation doesn't delete previously generated thumbnails. Although, that may or may not be desirable behaviour for some. Maybe turning off the option should prompt the user, asking whether to delete previously generated thumbnails?

Re: Turn off thumbnail generation in Filestation
i'm not a fan off automatic thumbnail generation. i know there is a reason for it, but i don't like it in it's current form ....
If they insist on making them, i wish they at least generated them into a single directory, and not in the directory where my current data is stored. I notice these new thumbnails in those directories ..... i don't like that >_<;
example....
Anime >>> GTO (then it creates the thumbnail here....)
when i rather it instead just create here instead
multimedia >> thumbnail generation library >> (put them all centralized here)

Re: Turn off thumbnail generation in Filestation
I am one of those who would like to turn off the thumbnail generation in full. I am running a small company NAS TS-251 for file storage and we don't want to hear anything about thumbnails (because we need clean backups — without having first to script heavily — and because we do not need any confusion in the system of company files).
Therefore I have turned off thumbnail generation from File Station's admin account settings and disabled the Media Library and stopped Transcoding; I have also uninstalled Photo Station, Video Station, Music Station and Download Station; removed all Media Folders from Multimedia Management (Media Folder - Advanced Management) and Transcode Management (although under Transcode Management, the removed folders reappeared magically). And now, more or less, the thumbnails are not generated any more. Except that ...
... I sometimes need to use FileStation because it is the best way to bulk-change permissions (which get sometimes messed up by Apple computers using SMB). And I discovered that whenever I open an image in FileStation's own Image Viewer, the thumbnail generation is automatically re-started for that folder! In other words, if you open any image in FileStation even after making all reasonable efforts to turn off the thumbnails, expect to have a .@__thumb folder in that directory.
This is really a nuisance. We purchased the NAS for work purposes but now it seems we have to "serve" it by remembering that one must not open image files from FileStation. OK, I can remember that but I cannot prevent all employees from opening an image now and then. And I have not yet even tested what happens if an image file is opened from e.g. Android's Qfile.
Therefore, here is my question: does anyone here know what engine or application on TS-251 is responsible for thumbnail generation and would it be possible, in principle, to rename it for good in order to prevent its automatic actions even after the user has heartily attempted to turn off thumbnails from all places in the GUI?

Can someone clearly show me where this option is located? My NAS has started generating thumbnails again...

I would really like to turn off thumbnail creation in file station, they are too small to be of use, and sometimes my 412 seems to generate them very slowly. Just a small button somewhere on the gui to either turn on on or off will suffice. coque galaxy A8 coque samsung galaxy A8

I'm not seeing it. I was archiving a bunch of photos and it was too many and it seemed to fail. Where is this option?

Re: Turn off thumbnail generation in Filestation
I'm very new to my NAS, but I think I have thumbnail generation turned off. Simply login via qFinder, click Control Panel, click Shared Folders. Locate the folder you wish to turn off thumbnail generation and go over to the right of the screen and click the Edit Properties button. Uncheck 'Media Folder', and save. (If you want to turn it off for ALL shares, simply click Edit Properties for each separate share)
Like I said, I *think* this is how to do it. I had some other issues I was working on, and when I unchecked this box, I no longer got the notification that the system is auto-generating thumbnails when I added new folders that contained images within that particular share.
Hope this helps.
If my answer is incorrect, please someone let me know. I don't want to give out incorrect info.

Re: Turn off thumbnail generation in Filestation
Thank you for the help. That seemed to do it. It was still generating thumbnails and I turned this off and the background task stopped. Thankfully, it would have taken another year to generate all those thumbnails it seems. Thanks again!namtrab wrote:I'm very new to my NAS, but I think I have thumbnail generation turned off. Re: Turn off thumbnail generation in Filestation
I recently purchased a QNAP TS-451+ NAS with firmware updated to 4.2.3 build 20170203 and much to my dismay I'm plagued by tens of thousands of unwanted .@__thumb folders and files automatically created by the NAS. These files are very well hidden, even when the option to show hidden files is selected in the Filestation app, but they appear in my backups and when when performing certain system functions. Having done extensive research into the subject (yes, I searched) I **think** I've managed to disable their creation. However, I'm left with a lot of garbage to remove from my files.
Keep in mind that I have no interest in multimedia features or applications and simply want to use this box as a file server... NOTHING MORE. It's bad enough that the user interface is a disaster, but to create hidden files and folders scattered among a users files is simply unacceptable. I returned a newly purchased Synology DS-416play NAS last week for this very reason, except that the Synology created thousands of @eaDir folders and files. I thought the QNAP I bought to replace it might have been a better choice, but now I'm seriously having second thoughts. It's a shame because the QNAP hardware seems to be really well made, with a much better design than that offered by Synology, or at least in my opinion. However, the firmware/software leaves MUCH to be desired... it's confusing and overly complicated, being anything but intuitive.
Can anyone tell me how I can rid myself the annoying .@__thumb garbage? Preferably the solution would not involve SSH connections and cryptic Linux command line syntax, but at this point I simply want to solve this problem so I'm willing to consider anything... as long as it works. Also, I would like it to be a permanent fix if possible.
If all else fails, I see no alternative but to return the QNAP and opt for yet another NAS, which means I get the pleasure of moving 8 terabytes of data for a third time.
Thanks in advance.

I've currently got a call in with QNAP Support about this issue, despite disabling all options for thumb generating my system is still creating the folders.dswv42 wrote:I recently purchased a QNAP TS-451+ NAS with firmware updated to 4.2.3 build 20170203 and much to my dismay I'm plagued by tens of thousands of unwanted .@__thumb folders and files automatically created by the NAS. Re: Turn off thumbnail generation in Filestation
I've decided to solve my problem by returning the QNAP NAS and doing what I should have done in the first place... purchase professional grade equipment. If this thread (and many others) say anything, they say that QNAP either has no interest in fixing this problem, or they are simply too incompetent to do so. As a user, I don't have the time nor the inclination to tinker or experiment with various tweaks simply to get a device to work as it should have done in the first place. My days of tinkering are long gone and I simply want it to work, PERIOD. Having spent over a week trying to get a simple NAS solution up and running, I'm tired and frustrated from moving terabytes of data from one NAS to another, only to learn that I have to do it all over again.GTunney wrote:I've currently got a call in with QNAP Support about this issue, despite disabling all options for thumb generating my system is still creating the folders.dswv42 wrote:I recently purchased a QNAP TS-451+ NAS with firmware updated to 4.2.3 build 20170203 and much to my dismay I'm plagued by tens of thousands of unwanted .@__thumb folders and files automatically created by the NAS. QNAP, if you are listening, and Synology too for that matter. The #1 rule of data management is that you DO NOT ALTER it. In this case it means that you take whatever is stored on the NAS and put it in a safe place. And when the user decides to perform a backup, you retrieve the data and put it wherever the user wants... UNALTERED. If the OS or applications require system files, you put them in SYSTEM directories, separate from the user files. It taint' rocket science ya know!

Re: Turn off thumbnail generation in Filestation
it looks that only huge amount of leaving users is the best method to tell Qnap that force to generate thumbnails for everyone is stupid idea.
Money will talks. i'm small home user with 212p and video_gen_thumb and ffmpeg proceses are killing my tiny qnap box. i'm calculated that i should invest in better qnap box, higher serie but will it be powerfull enough to not kill usability of device when it attempt to generate this f... thumb. for the money which i should pay for lets say 251 i can get HP Microserver gen8 and instal freenas or other "Nas" capable software without stupid thumb feature.
Everyone knows that adage: " It's not a bug it's a feature."
HEY QNAP it's not feature it's killing %$&^$ BUG!.
Thank You.
