DDNS Feature Enhancements

Postby MarkTO » Mon Sep 10, 2007 3:58 am

1) Add support for more Dynamic DNS update services:
2) Add the ability for the NAS to find the public IP address of the network if it is located behind a router.
Right now the NAS sends its local IP address to the Dynamic DNS update service but if the NAS is behind a router then this address will be incorrect for accessing the NAS from the Internet. The public IP address could be queried from a web site such as http://www.ip-adress.com, or a STUN server, or some dynamic DNS services can determine the public IP automatically (for example if you send an IP of 1.1.1.1 to easyDNS it will find the public IP for you).

For request 1:
Thanks for sharing information. It's a good suggestion, and our product manager will consider it.

For request 2:
We already had the ability to register external(public) IP in DDNS service.
Which f/w version do you use? And does it work fail in your system?
I am Kent. Nice to meet you!

Hi Kent, I am using 2.1.0 build 0612T and I'm also experiencing the DDNS not working properly. It worked for the non-telnet version of this firmware, but when I installed the T version, the DDNS started showing the internal IP address again.

My domain hoster selfhost.de is supporting the same update interface as dyndns.org. So to use the qnap update feature i only need to enter the IP address carol.selfhost.de of the selfhost.de update server.

Does anybody knows in which file the ddns configuration can be changed?

DDNS Feature Enhancements:
For upcoming firmware it would be nice to be able to enter the ddns server name on the netword/ddns admin control tab.

Yep, this system has become a de-facto standard.

Due to many reasons, DDNS is a networking functionality for a router, and not for a device residing behind a NAT. but this is a different story.

Not convinced if this is why QNAP ignores enhancing and extending DDNS support since the early days.
